I am looking for some free floating rail system recommendations for your standard old Bushmaster AR15. This is a full length AR. I have seen quite a few like this:

at places like BravoCompanyUSA.com and a few others, but I am wondering what you guys recommend. Obviously, I don't want to pay $300 for something that is junk so if you guys can inform me of your experiences that would be awesome. Then on the other side of things I could just get a little rail that mounts to the top and bottom of the handguards and save myself some weight and money. What do you guys recommend? I want to mount some sort of Halo sight in it, perhaps a light, and a foregrip, that is all. I can probably do with just the sight and foregrip, but you know....oh yeah I forgot to mention that it has the old iron sight on the front as well. I am not sure if that would hinder me putting a rail on there or not.

What is your budget? If you want the best, get Daniel Defense. Their product is excellent.

bravoco doesn't sell too much junk, so you're pretty safe buying stuff from them.

daniel defense and larue are top shelf stuff, however... correct assembly is as important as quality product, and their assembly instructions leave something to be desired. so having someone who knows what they're doing install them is generally a good idea.

for instance, aligning the flat top and quad rail so your front and rear buis work together w/o going max-windage to one side, can be something of a PITA

My budget at this point is unlimited. However, I must admit that this is not a flatop AR, it has the carry handle. I am not sure how much that would limit the mounting of some optics and accessories yet hence the reason I am looking at the rail. I know that they sell mounts that can go on top of the carry handle, cantilevers, top/bottom handguard mounts etc. However, I am thinking that a free floating rail would offer more versatility. Then again, if I can mount a red dot, scope, and foregrip without the full rail system then maybe I should go that route save some money and some weight. That is my current dilemma. I was looking at the Daniel Defense but then seen some others which is when I really started to question quality. So, do you guys think I should go with a full floating system or no?

You have to disassemble your upper to a large degree anyway if you want to put on a barrel nut-type of rail, so you might just want to buy a stripped flattop upper.

Well, since your budget is unlimited and you want quality, go with Daniel Defense.

If you're going to send off the rifle OR are willing/able to replace the barrel nut, which requires removing/reinstalling the FSB then LaRue or D.D. are hard to beat.

If you're going to do it yourself and can't/don't want to remove the parts discussed before then look at MI, Troy and ARMS.

If your only interested in mounting an optic and grip (and not interested in the FF's potential accuracy improvement) then a KAC RAS or Surefire will hold tight and replace the stock handguards.

A free float rail does not contact the barrel at any point. Other handguards do touch the barrel near the FSB which reduce accuracy by affecting the harmonics of the barrel when a round is fired. Anything contacting the barrel... rail, bipod, etc. reduce accuracy. The AR is still extremely accurate without the FF rail and depending on your uses for the rifle, the increased accuracy may not even be noticed.

stalker accuracy improvement is what a fleefloat system is all about!when the handgaurd does not touch the barrel you improve acc that holds true on any rifle......i;m going to put a JP freefloat handgaurd on one of my AR'S might wanna check them out

Look at the Daniels Defense Omega Rail. Seems to be an excellent rail and doesn't require AR surgery. That is what I am looking to buy when I can get the funds.

I bought the Midwest Industries 10" free-float through BravoCo and absolutely love it :D Great price, tight lock-up, and easier install than most of the others that require removing the barrel nut.

This is something that I've been wondering about lately ... is any AR type rifle barrel TRULY free-floating in the same way that a bolt rifle barrel may be? The gas block is connected to the gas tube which is connected to the upper receiver. Admittedly, the gas tube is free to slide inside the bolt housing but there's still contact. Just a thought ....

:)

I might get smashed for this but I've had good luck with Yankee Hill Machine (YHM) good price good quality. Give them a call.

I'll get smashed, too, then.

I like the YHM lightweight FF forearm on my M4gery. I wish they had an offering on their site for the LR-308.

my take

There's also some potentially useful information re: weights and dimensions there.

I would, as someone else mentioned, take the opportunity to change out to a flattop as well if you choose anything other than the DD Omega.
