I have been looking for a shotgun and need some help. it will be used for shooting milk jugs I can spend $200 but I could go up to $250 it has to be 12G or 20G (because thats all i can find in ammo around here) it can be single shot or pump. i was looking at the remington 870 and my dad said they had gas blow by problems and remington made junk and to get something eles.
is this true how can i tell if there is gas blow by.is there a batter shotgun in my price range. i do not know any thing about shotguns.
thanks

Never heard of any pump shotgun with "gas blow-by" problems!
Must be the Burritos!

The Remington 1100 semi-auto might have gas blow-by problems if the O-Ring seal is damaged, but it is not a problem if the gun is properly maintained.

Anyway, you would be hard pressed to find a better or more reliable pump shotgun at any price then a nice old used 870 Wingmaster.

The new Express model 870's are known to have a few cost cutting measures, and sometimes a problem or two.

But any of that doesn't apply to the 870 Wingmasters of old.

take a look at a mossberg 500, you might be able to go new for that price range, i have a few mossbergs and a few remington 870s and I prefer the 870 but highly suggest that you handle both before buying.

there are cheaper knock offs of both designs but the originals will have great parts availability if anything breaks in them and that wont happen often. the knock offs might not have the same back up once you buy them.

hope that helps

Yeah, I've never heard of any blow-by issues on any 870. I've fired one, and although I'm a Mossberg shotgun guy, I like it. You can get a Maverick Model 88 (which is pretty much identical to the Mossberg 500, and uses the same barrel, and choke tubes) for $170 at Wal-Mart. I've got an 88, and L-O-V-E it!!

You won't be disappointed with an 870, or a 500, which are what I would buy in that price range.

For the money you've got, I'd go with a Mossberg. But I'm not sure where you're Dad's come'n off talking down about the Remington 870.

I have 2 of them and they are the BEST shotguns I have ever owned. And I've had my fair share. I have had one for several years and I use one to bird hund and the other for duck hunting. I've dropped both of them in the mud before...clean them up best I could (with my duck gun...I even swished it through the water in the blind...and it shot like a chap all day long). So don't let one person's experience or opinion turn you off from a particual firearm. I know he's your Dad and that may be hard, but...opinions are like @ssholes, everyone's got one. Just like me, I'm supporting the 870, while you Dad is against it.

The Remington 1100 {gas-operated semi-auto} has gas blow-by problems if the O-ring gets damaged/worn....never head of such a problem with the 870, since it is a pump gun.

For sub-$250 new, one word....Mossberg (and their subsidiary, Maverick Arms)

I have both a Mossberg 500 and a Maverick 88. Both are good solid serviceable shotguns.

870 is your best bet. If you get lucky you might be able to snag a wingmaster for around $250, otherwise you can find an express for around $200 any day of the week. Try a mossberg too if you want, for what you're describing it would be very good too.

Mossberg 500

This post should become my signature, I think: the Mossberg 500 is a fantastic shotgun. Very light but ported so the recoil is very tame. Action is very smooth.

I got mine for $189 on sale.

Remington makes junk?

That's news to me- and no doubt to the overwhelming majority of American law enforcement agencies which issue/use Remington 870s, to include the Secret Service.

If you don't want to hurt your dad's feelings, get something besides an 870. But that would be the ONLY reason not to get one, IMHO.

.....the ONLY reason not to get one......

I disagree with that. I simply didn't like the 870 setup as much as the 500 (safety and action release on front of trigger guard, etc).

its alot of personal preference, handle as many as you can that are in your price range and buy what suits you best
either way you cant really go wrong with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500

well I looked at some gunshops around here and the lowest price you could get one for was $299 for the 870 you could get the 500 for $269. I was at a friend shops and he said he was sold out of pump and would not be getting anymore. so i was looking around whan I see a nice looking single BBL he said he would sell it to me for $75. I bought it and some other stuff. it looks and feels very nice heres some pics

do any of you have this model or know any thing about it.

thanks for all the help

I know you will be looking for a recoil pad installer after you shoot the first 3" Mag in it! :D

MAVERICK 88... Made by mossberg but IIRC the only difference is the safety. They make at least 4 different models in 12 ga.. I have not heard anything bad about them but also haven't gotten the chance to shoot one. I believe this will be my next though. And for around 200 flat you cant go wrong. check em out for your self, the link is below.

I would also let you know I own a NEF Pardner Pump and consider it fair quality. I would have opted for the mossberg if I would have known that it was going to come with a broken extractor. The company paid shipping both ways and repair costs. Couldn't be happier now but,(and a big IF)to experience out of the box manufacturer malfunction would lead me away from the company. That was the only problem and they fixed it promptly and without any cost to me so I believe over all I would refer it to someone. The biggest factor in my purchase was the price. 179.99 IIRC. Unless you buy a used gun It will be hard(but no impossible.) to match that price with a Mossberg or Remington.

well he is a colt 1911 guy. just about all his guns are colt 1911 or colt ar 15s and his shotguns are benelli. so he looks down on remington, S&W, mossberg, ete and you know how that go if it not a benelli then its junk. he knows alot about guns just 1911s. he has not got a new gun in 20 years so he knows what was junk back in 1981 but not now.

Remington 870s weren't junk in 1981 either, and there's no such thing as a gas blow by problem in a pump gun. Either way, sounds like you found what you wanted. It doesn't sound like he's ever handled or shot an 870.

to state the facts pumps dont have anything about to do with gas. i have an 870 myself and ive killed more with it than with any other gun i have. there reliable strong guns that perform under the worst conditions. ive laid in a duck blind in 0-10 degree weather raining.the shotgun was covered in surface rust but shot perfect cycled perfect. ive dropped it in water before i poured out the water and started shooting away. problems ive had none
