Ive been thinking about getting a Remington 700 stainless in 270 win. I want to get the barrel chopped to 16in and have a muzzlebrake added. Any thoughts or comments?

Its not a good idea at all. If you have to chop one to that length, a 308 would be better. You would get more powder burnt actually pushing the bullet, versus the 270 from 16" flashing a good bit out of the end. If I were you, I'd go 308 chopped and recrowned at 18.5". Still very handy and still somewhat efficient.

Internet myth.

The 270 will lose more velocity when cut shorter than a 308. But because it starts with a lot more speed, it will still have more speed when cut short.

Another myth is that you use faster burning powder with shorter barrels. All of the powder is burned within a few inches anyway. The powder that gives you the best velocity from a 26" barrel will also be the fastest powder from a 16" barrel.

Here is some data from various rifles as their barrels were cut shorter, including 270

That said, I wouldn't go below 20". And that is with any chambering. Muzzle blast becomes a big problem as does the guns balance. I've found 20" to be plenty handy in the thickest brush and it still gives enough velocity even from magnum rounds to work well at longer ranges.

I think that what I am trying to say is that an overbore cartridge like a 270 works well from a 24" barrel. Thanks for clearing that up though.
