I used to shoot some 30 years ago, and am now getting back into it. Was out the other day with my 30-06, 8mm, and 22 rifles with my 22 and 45 pistols. Had a great time.

One question- I would like a rifle as inexpensive to shoot as a 22, and with less recoil than the ‘06/8mm. I keep hearing 243 and 270.

I know I want to stay with a bolt action and with a scope- my eyes are too bad for iron sights like in college! No plans for hunting as yet, but who knows- maybe. I live in MD, in the hills.

What are your suggestions?

223 or 22 hornet are about your best options.

270 is gonna recoil very much like the 8 mauser. 243 is not inexpensive, though recoils light.

go remington 700 vls in 223 and have a good time!

A CZ 527 sounds like a good choice. But the only thing that will be as inexpensive as a .22 is a .22. The next cheapest ammo near me is .22WMR at 15cents a round.

If you are essentially plinking any caliber will get that done. But not as cheaply as .22 LR! I sort of like .243 as it is pretty versatile. .223 is further down the scale but also less expensive to shoot.

If you handload you can tweak things and cut the cost even more, of course.

Yeah, and I would like a super model that loves to stay home and clean my house. Cast your own bullets and reload light loads is as close as you will get.

Well that ain't happening unless you get another .22.

As far as other relatively inexpensive routes, a Savage 12FV in .223 would fill the bill as closely as anything and they are VERY accurate out of the box.
