Most of my pistol experience has been range time doing 3 round bursts at 15 yards from a draw (for practicing self-defense). While I do well on this (doing 2" groups) I pretty much suck past that range. At 25 yards I have about a 2 foot drop from my aim. I suspect I have a low rear sight but it might just be my lack of skill with the sight window. Need some good links or free info before I think about paying for a range instructor.

check out my web site from my signature and find the link called "drills". I have the firearms training manuals for several law enforcement agencies and a few other things in PDF format.

It might be what you're looking for.

Mr Dove,

Thanks for the .pdf of the Texas corrections course. I didn't have that one yet.

FYI, there is an up to date one out there for NJ. The copy I have is dated Jan 2004.

It stops being self defence at 25 yards. You may have a high front sight too. Although it's far more likely to be your grip. Go back to the basics and get the thing on paper shooting slowly. Rapid fire is for IPSC.

If your 15 yard groups are on for windage/elevation, but your 25 yard groups are 2 FEET low, I would suspect follow through to be your problem. Are you trying to see your hits on target as soon as you are done shooting? A well-thrown rock shouldn't have much more drop than that!

Try 1 shot, 2 sight pictures, 2 shots, 3 sight pictures, etc. Re-acquire the sights for a follow-up shot, even if you don't think you're going to fire again.
If that doesn't work, having someone who knows what they're doing watch you shoot would be absolutely invaluable.

Oh, and as for self defense stopping at 25 yards...:scrutiny:
If your life is in danger, your life is in danger. Very rarely will you be required to take a pistol shot at extended range, but it could happen. there's no magic distance.
