Alright Fellas I could use a little help! Im loading 45 acp 200 grain lead bullets, I believe there the IDP #4.Remington primers,Unique powder. Chart that came with my dies says 4.8-5.2 grains for 790fps. We looked at Hornadys reloading manuel at Bass Pro Shops and it said 7.2 grains for 1000fps. Can someone tell me whats what and if these Remingtons will work with Unique and with the 4.8-5.2 grain recipe. I really wanted to be around 950 fps. Can I get there with Missouri Bullet Comp lead bullets. Im reading so much im just spinning my wheels!!! Thanks for your help!!

So load less than 7.2 grains. If 5.2 grains gives you 800 FPS and 7.2 grains gives you 1000 FPS then somewhere in the 6.5 grain range is where you wanna be.

Lyman 49 says 7.5 gr will you only 980fps. That's a lot of Unique, but I read it right.

Why not try about 6.5 gr as 918v suggests, and see where you wind up? Velocities in manuals are rarely the same as your gun will achieve.

Without sending the rounds over a chrono you can't know what velocity you're getting. The above charge weight advice seems very reasonable to me.

As for why the big variations on load data, there are many factors which change the max charge weights. Bullet type, bullet material, primer type, COAL and a few others will change the max charge weights. Use common sense and you will do fine.

Welcome to reloading and to the forum...

Thank you for your responses!! Will the Remington primers be ok? Im gonna just have to go get a chronograph and start low! I bet some one at my gunclub would probably let me use theirs. I do appreciate the help how ever!!! I wish Mo bullet company would just post some graphs, but completely understand the liability!! They are 15 minutes from my house and seemed really cool!! So Id like to find a round i can use from them. What are you guys shooting?

200 LSWC happens to be one of my favs.

You will likely find it most accurate using :

5-5.5 grs w231

4-5.0 grs Promo

5.5-6.5 grs Unique

4.5- 6grs of Red Dot

And there are many others.......

Velocity really does not mean much in a button training round, other than a number.

Trying to achieve a specific velocity with a lead bullet is usually only desired to defeat leading when all other avenues are exhausted, and you are certainly going to need a chronograph. The crystal ball metric that manual producing companies use in their load data books....you will likely never achieve.

Specific velocity data is most useful in pistols when evaluating whether or not HP bullets will deploy as advertised from your gun/load/charge, etc.

Beyond that, find a load that shoots accurately- with a recoil and function which you find acceptable if not pleasant, and stick with that.

Remington primers are just fine...

My favorite 45 Auto load is any 230gr bullet over 5.5gr W231.

When I do load a 200gr bullet I use a charge of 5.6gr w231 but you can go higher. I doubt that load will produce 1000 fps but I also don't see the need to generate 1000 fps from a 200gr lead .45 Auto load.

I figure getting close to 1000fps is a little closer to my defensive rounds then 800 lol, and well thats all i could come up with!! Thanks again!!

I love my W-231 under 230 grain Hornady XTP. I use Remington primers. Brand faithful I guess to go with my M700 30-06.

It is, but in a fire fight you won't notice.

Hay man I wanted to thank all of you guys again for your help!! Im ordering a Chrono tonight so ill let you guys know the results!!!

Had a chance to get out today and shoot with my first pistol reloads and the new Chrono.!! I went with the Lee loading table that came with my new dies and loaded up 4.9 grains of Unique. My highest velocity was 560!!! WOW Really slow!! I'm gonna try going 6.5 grains and see what that brings it up to!! 540 and lower wouldn't cycle my Para and my buddys Kimber- forget it!!! Had fun though and didn't blow up my gun!!! Good Day!!

Where did you get that 4.9gr load? On the Alliant site they list a charge of 6.5gr Unique under a 230gr FMJ bullet as the Max. If you drop back 10% the starting charge weight should be 5.8gr. That's almost 1 full grain higher than the load you used. It's no wonder your velocity was so low, you were nowhere near the starting charge weight! I think you got lucky not to stick a bullet in the barrel with that load...
