need some info on a Remington 03-A3

We bought a Remington Model 03-A3 at my grandfathers estate sale (it was his fathers) to put back for our son when he gets older. We would like some info on this gun. Have done some internet research but have not found a whole lot about the gun. It does have a few markings on it..some are readable a few are faded. We are also trying to figure out how to open the trap door(cleaning kit holder) in the butt of the gun. Any info would be greatly appericated. The ser. # is 3800227.

The trap door should just flip open, could be stuck...

The doors in the buttplate tend to have a strong spring, so you will need to eat your Wheaties. If you can't flip it open with your finger, try a screwdriver.

Your rifle is 1942. Looking at the serial number range for that year:
1942:3708000-4707999
would place it in the early part of the year.

For example:

Take a look behind the front sight. You should see the maker and date of the barrel. For a Remington, it should look something like:
RA
"Bomb"
MM-YY

If your barrel is original, it should be early 1942.
