I have a 12ga. 1300. It has some scratches on the receiver and looks like crap. I can get the receiver bead blasted and take off old paint, but the receiver is aluminum and I know you can't use regular paint. So what would I use? I would like to make it O.D. green, is there a primer that will stick to aluminum so I could use a regular O.D. green paint? All info will be nice, Thanks.

Brownell's sell several different "spray and bake" gun finishes.

All of these will stick to aluminum just fine, although bead blasting the metal gives the surface a "tooth" that helps the finish to stick.

These finishes are sprayed on the CLEAN, THOROUGHLY degreased metal, then baked in your kitchen oven.

The finishes come in a good number of colors, including OD Green.

The finishes are cheap, easy to do, are durable and tough, and the gun can easily be re-done or touched up if needed.

Here's the finishes:

Other options are to send the gun out to a refinishing service that can apply one of the tough polymer finishes.

They also sell a product called aluminum black for either touch up of your anodized reciever , or complete re-finish .

Aluminum will begin to corrode within an hour of sanding/bead blasting (depending on the grade of aluminum and humidity). As long as you get a good, self etching primer on quick you'll have no problem.

Since most shotgun receivers don't get over 160 degrees when shooting, a good automotive primer will take care of most SG receivers.

You can go to an auto body supply (finishmaster, keystone, etc.) and pick up an aerosol can of primer for abour $10 - $15. Apply two or three coats and let it dry. After that you can sand it lightly with a fine sandpaper and coat with a good quality spray on finish.

Drop me a PM with your zip code and I can point you to a store that sells a primer that will suit your needs. I may not be able to get back to you 'til Monday but I'll do my best.

Aircraft aluminum Vs. shotgun aluminum

Don't know if this helps, but the Navy uses zinc chromate primer under paint on aircraft. Excellent finish, but I have no idea how much it would cost you buy some as a civilian.
