Need a little help making a decision! My battery has always included handguns, rifles, shotguns, and some type of carbine. I'm trying to talk myself into simplifying things slightly and doing away with the carbine.

In my area and situation, shots would be limited to less than 100 yards, hell, most likely less than 50 yards. Maybe even less than 50 feet. The idea is that at these close ranges a rifle sighted shotgun will have the same capability as the carbine without having to support another rifle(ammo, mags, parts, training, etc.)

Right now the handgun is a Glock 32 with a light, the shotgun is a Mossberg 590A1 with a light mount and speedfeed stock, and the carbine is an FAL conglomeration with a 16.5 inch barrel.

Now, keeping in mind the reduced ranges, am I really getting any more out of the carbine? I keep talking myself out of it and then back into it. I have another FAL long rifle that keeps the faith, so to speak, and it fills the bill for an MBR type of rifle. It's the carbine I am trying to figure out.

The carbine and shotgun are both roughly the same length and weight, so that's not really a consideration. The ammo capacity is acceptable in both weapons. Since the .308 is giving up velocity in such a short barrel, I think the power difference might not be that great either.

I guess I'm asking about anything I might not have considered? Am I giving up anything besides range if I just use the 12 guage? The carbine, if retired, would get yet another renovation and most likely end up long and scoped, so it wouldn't go to waste. I might get an 1100 or something similar to replace the pump (if the carbine goes away) just to keep things quick.:D

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I'd say the carbine is redundant since you already have a full-size FAL.

"CQB" to me implies about <25 yards - room-to-room, in your face combat. The Mossberg 590 is about ideal for this kind of work, and the Glock is a fine backup. Both will do fine from about 0-50 yards. The FAL can take care of the rest.

Maybe consider an AR/AK-type carbine? These weapons are fairly effective at close ranges, but also effective out to 150-200 yards if need be. The shotgun is a bit less versatile in that respect.

That's a cool problem to have :p I think the FAL carbine is a little redundant, but an AR15 M4 type variation would do nicely. I was thinkin' 'bout a .50 Beauwolf AR instead of a shotgun for home defense. I live in a rural area (plus), but I can't afford to pay attention right now (minus).:D

HD under 25 yards, you can't beat a good quality 12ga pump shotgun with an 18" or 20" barrel. Light, handy, reliable, intimidating and it's stopping power capability is undeniable (if you choose proper ammo).

You don't need to spend tons of money to get quality tools.

Thanks to all for the input!

I have had an AK and several AR's in the past but all fit in the "carbine" category. What I'm trying to figure out is if I need anything at all in that category or if the shotgun will do it all. I guess I'm just trying to get my brain around the idea.

If it's more than 100 yards out, I'm goin' for the big FAL iron....:D

If it needs more thump, out comes the 375 H&H:what:

Maybe I have too many guns? :scrutiny:

Nah, impossible...
