Need some input

Ok guys i live in a humid area and i am really frustrated because i coat my guns with oil i put them in the safe. i come back a week later and some of them will have rust on them again. I don't mean like a little bit of rem oil i mean i oil them up big time. And still rust. My friend who also has guns doesn't have a rust problem and he doesn't even oil his guns half the time. so what am i missing? Also does any one use any treatments like gun sealant or anything. Thanks for your time.

do a thread search to find what you need. Question. Are you using RemOil or something similar? Are your guns stored in a gun safe? Are they stored in gun cases? Is the rust only on the outer surfaces of the guns or is it also on the internal parts? Is there anyone besides you handling the guns? The reason for all these questions is to emphasize that every situation is unique and what works for one of us might not work for the other guy. Your rust problem might not be solved just by buying the right can of GEE WHIZ! at the gun shop.

I live in a humid area also and I have found that if you put a "Golden Rod" in your gun safe that will take care of the problem.

Try wiping them down with R.I.G. grease. It is designed to stop rust.
Gun oil is a lubricant and not so much a rust inhibitor.

It does sound like you have a mosture problem in your safe though.

+1 on the R.I.G. suggestion.
I keep a 10x10 inch piece of sheepskin. well impregnated with R.I.G. in a closed coffee can and wipe the whole gun down, including wood , after each handling.

Thanks guys i'll look into the rig grease. It makes sense that remington oil might be more about lube than rust prevention. My safe has 4 little holes on the top of the safe. A friend recommended that i tape those little holes closed and put a can of charcoal briquettes in the safe. Is that a good idea also?

I would use something besides tape to plug the holes.
Bolts, nuts & washers perhaps?

I have not heard of using charcoal briquettes for desiccant.

You can get a large can of desiccant from most gun supply outfits on-line.
Or a Goldenrod is even better.

What is the humidity level like in your house?

It is also possible you just have especially toxic sweat.
Some folks can rust a chrome trailer hitch ball from just a passing glance.

Others can leave fingerprints all over a blued gun and never get a speck of rust from it on it.

Different body chemistry I guess.

Never thought about the sweat thing. Most of my guns have polymer stocks is rig safe to use on those to? And yes it is very humid in my house. But i don't have much control over that.

Placing metal inside metal will lead to condensation and rust w/. temp. change . Blocking breather holes will agrivate problem.
Suggestions:
1. Move safe to center of bldg., away from heat,windows, drafts, etc.
2. Get or use same absorbent packs,as found in packing matl..These can be safely recycled in the oven (Refer pub. library).
3.After dealing w/. existing rust, wrap weapons in OIL CLOTH or eqivalent using heavy oil and 2 wraps of cotton sheeting.
4.For long term storage mix thinned cosmline, coat weapon inside and out.
Last 2 have been used by Resistance-U.S. Army,etc. for dirt storage for decades. Always be aware of pos. effects to mod. mat'ls., such as plastics.

I keep a rag in a baggie on top of the safe and a Small bottle of CLP. I wipe guns down and use the rag to hold the barrel as I place them inside.
