I have recieved a rifle as a gift and have no idea what caliber it is I am pretty sure it is a "mauser" I cant get the pictures to work right so all I have is my description. It has the old wood stock and is a bolt action also takes a clip it has a tall flip up sight with that has a slide that you can move up and down the sight it is located down the top of the stock. The wood stock wraps back over the barrel just in front of the bolt. I have however no idea what caliber it is, can anybody help me? Lol

I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.

There should be some markings on the barrel and/or the top of the reciever forward of the firing chamber. That should get you a good start. Let us know if you find anything there.

Yeah, really need to know what markings it has. Your description matches several hundred different military rifles. lol

Should be something on the top of the receiver ring, or on the left side of the receiver. Any import stamps would also list the caliber. Usually near the muzzle on the barrel.

there are numbers all over this thing...

#s on the sights, the bolt, the barrel the trigger guard, I will see what I can find though. Thanks for the help so far

The numbers usually don't tell you a whole lot, usually just serial numbers. Any words, writing, country crest, odd symbols? Doesn't sound like it has been rebarreled or sporterized, so it should be in the standard military caliber of whatever country issued it.

Iphone

PM me your number and I will send them to you.. here is the best I can do with the pictures

or I can email them to you

I can also send them to you in an email these were the first I had tried to post from an iphone, I usually use my camera, And I just cant get them to do what I want. LOL imagine that

Well, that does look like a mauser. Is there by any chance a two or three letter code on top of the receiver, and maybe a date?

1893

seems like I remember the numbers 1893 stamped on there but cant be positive if that is exactly correct.......

OK after some search on google I am almost 99% sure it is a model 1893 but I am still not positive of what size rounds it takes, research says that more than likely it takes a "7mm" round"

The model 93 would take the 7x57mm mauser round. The 1893s were mainly used by Spain, and should have Spanish writing on the side of the receiver.

The picture on the left is a Model 1893 Mauser, and the one on the right is a Model 1898 Mauser. If your rifle looks more like the one on the left, it's most likely a 7x57mm Spanish Mauser. It could have been altered to another calibre, though; the Spanish rebarreled some of their old rifles to 7.62mm. The barrel should be stamped somewhere with the calibre and proof mark, though you may need to take off the stock to see it.

sorry for the "tiny" pictures

I learned my lesson on the iphone pics I will get my camera down there this week and take some good pictures and post some on here for you guys. Thanks for all the help though as of now
