Howdy folks. I recently came across a Winchester 94 I couldn't quite pinpoint in my Blue Book. I'm very interested in purchasing it but I wondered if someone could help with some info before I picked it up.

Anyway, I've come across a 94 with a 16 inch barrel, saddle ring, semi-buckhorn sights (I think) and a big loop lever. Chambered in 30-30. Wood is in great condition with just a tiny, tiny bit of rust on the front end of the receiver. It was manufactured in 1980 according to the serial number. This was the last year before USRA took over, correct? Is this considered one of the "good" batches of 94s? I know that question is subjective...

Like I said I couldn't quite find the model in my book, at least not one that mentioned the saddle ring and the big loop lever. Always one or the other. I realize they could have added the big loop afterwards, not sure on the saddle ring.

Another question. I don't know a whole lot about levers or even older types of sights. I've never quite seen sights like these though. The rear is kind of like a shallow U with no notch per se for the front post to line up in. I'm honestly not sure what the sight picture should look like. Do you hold the front post where the notch would be? Do you hold it level with the sides of the rear sight? I suppose I could just take it to the range and experiment but I thought I might save some ammo. I do like them though. I can pick them up very quickly when mounting the rifle.

Anyway, thanks for any help.

I don't know much about the gun you are looking at but if it helps a friend who I went hunting with carried one for bear protection while I was archery hunting and it was a very nice looking gun. Just before we went home I got to shoot it and it was very nice to shoot. He only had factory ammo and I don't know what it was other than 30-30, but it was very nice to shoot. I am really thinking about getting one at some point.

Should be the Wrangler AE model. They are very nice rifles.

Agree with ECV as a hunting buddy has the same gun. You might also look at the Williams peep sights as they work very well.

If it is a top eject it looks like it should be a forth model receiver. These were redesigned in 1978 and generally considered to be a good version of the 94. People, like myself, who detest safeties on leverguns would pay a premium for this version. This receiver should not be one of the "Mystery Metal" receivers that flake and discolor. I would pick that up if you have the chance. It is a nice gun.

If it ejects from the side and has no safety, then you have found one of my Holly Grail variations of the 94. These feature a steel forged receiver and this is one of the best later models out there.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Why is it that the 1969 Gold Spike edition only sells for $500, I bought one back then still NIB and I think it was the worst $100 investment I ever made. Guess I should start shooting the thing.

I assumed it was top eject as it doesn't say AE on it. I'll have to run a few shells through it when I pick it up.

Thanks for all the info though guys! I've already been looking at sights for it but haven't decided which one. I know the reviews on it aren't great from what I've read but does anyone have any experience with the Lyman tang sight?

It's a top eject like I figured it was. I do have another 94 noob question though. Is there a way to tighten up the lever on 94s? I know most wobble a little bit but this is the loosest one I've seen. I thought maybe it just seemed worse because of the big loop but I'm not sure. It doesn't really bother me too much as I knew what I was getting into, just curious if there was a way to remedy it.
