You are correct that BLO can be used with oil base paints. Most oil base paint and stains use Raw Linseed Oil. BLO has a dryer added to it so that it will dry faster then RLO.
These two topics both go into BLO finish’s and the second one covers the staining to match wood.

When it comes to sanding blocks are used to keep even pressure. This doesn’t mean that you have to use one of the rubber ones or even a large one. You can use something as small as a popsicle stick.
You work with wood and know that the growth rings are harder then the wood between them. When using your Hans or just finger tips you apply uneven pressure. The more meaty the hand the more uneven the pressure can be. What the uneven pressure causes is ripples in the surface.
Two things are common around guns, oils and solvents. These can cause Polly finishes trouble.
No don’t take this the wrong, not trying to put your finish down, but Polly finishes in the gun world are considered cheap. But a lot of gun manufacturers use a type of spray finish that is dried with a UV light to make it very hard. Kind of like the finish that is on some laminate flooring.

Now when removing a finish most often there are a few other things on the stock like oil and dirt. A stripper with cut through these and also remove some of the oil that has gotten just below the surface. It will also help to raise small dings and dents. Steaming will raise deeper dents. For those bad dents that just won’t stem out you use toilet paper. You make a small wet wad and place it on the dent. Place in a cool area so that it dries slow. As it dries it will pull the dent up.
I see that you in Mississippi, I’m in Louisiana just east of Baton Rough. You are more then welcome to come by if your in the area.
