Need to clean right away? Maybe not.

Actually after I clean my gun with Simple Green and water rinse I treat the bore with Natural Lube 1000. Maybe this has something to do with my gun not rusting. And if memory serves I was shooting Maxi-Balls that had Natural Lube 1000 on them before I put it in my trunk. Gee something more to think about.

CRKToter: Bore Butter is basically vegetable shortening with some preservative and fragrance. Crisco works just as well. Like any natural lubricant, Bore Butter does not form hard fouling when used with BP.

If you lube your patches with Bore Butter you can shoot long strings of PRB without having to run a spit patch between each shot. The lube keeps the fouling soft. Loading the next patched ball swabs the bore just enough to keep things steady-state.

You may find a little more consistency when using fancy moose milk type lube on your patches, but the tradeoff is harder fouling and the need to swab between every shot.

That is not good enough for cleaning, though. You will still have to flush the barrel with hot water when you're done. Once you dry it, you can lube it with Bore Butter as a preservative. I'll do that if I know I'm going to be shooting again in the next week or so, but if the gun is going to remain idle for extended periods I'll use Ballistol or even Breakfree instead.

As for cleaning, I always clean my guns as soon as I get home or back to camp. At the range I usually clean them on the spot. I enjoy being at the range even if I'm not shooting, so I might as well clean the guns there before going home (wife tends to appreciate this, too). I shoot both black powder and corrosively primed surplus centerfire ammo. Cleanup is simple:
(1) Flush with hot water. Hot soapy water is better, optionally.
(2) Dry and/or displace water.
(3) For PRB guns, that's it. Run a grease patch and you're done.
(4) For guns that shoot sabots, conicals, or regular centerfire ammo, use the appropriate solvent(s), then lube and go home.

My muzzleloaders and C&R rifles might be filthy, but at least they don't require a kit full of pipe cleaners and dental picks like the AR guys ;)

I don't shoot round ball in my rifles. Mostly Maxi-balls and Minnie balls with some sabots thrown in for fun. So I don't use a patch. But what you say makes sense.

Crisco / Bore Butter makes fine bullet lube in cool weather. It gets a little too runny in the heat though.
