I found a NIB stainless Ruger Redhawk (not super) in .45 Colt with the 5.5" bbl. I have been lusting over one of these for a number of years. This one was stashed under some boxes at our local gunshop. The shop owner (a really great guy, very honest) and I were looking for something else when he stumbled upon it. He laughed and said that he had ordered this gun quite a few years ago, but somehow forgot to put it out.:what: This thing has never even been out of the box except to confirm the serial number!

I happily agreed to buy it for $700 out the door, cuz I've been wanting one exactly like this for years.

I gave him some $$ down to hold it for me. Now I need to come up with $600.

The only gun I have that I don't shoot alot is a Dan Wesson (Monsoon) stainless .41 Mag with heavy 6 inch barrel.

I like the gun alot, but I have several other .41s that I shoot more often (I don't know why...just have sentimental attachments to the others I guess).

The gun is in very good shape, no scratches or mars on the metal that I can see and the target stocks are also only showing minor wear.

So what do you guys think? How much do you think I could sell this tack driver for?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

I think $700 is way too much money for that gun. That doesn't even include a discount off current dealer markup.

Raskolnikov...I know what you mean...I'm really not liking the idea of letting go of a Monsoon Dan Wesson...if it doesn't look like I can get enough to pay the $600, I will seek another way to come up with the cash.

gbran..I don't think $700 is really out of line for a new gun that is out of production...I just checked Jerry's Sports Center (I have an ffl, so I can get dealer pricing). The dealer cost on a new .44 Mag, 5 1/2" bbl Redhawk is $564.73, add $35 shipping and that brings the cost up to $599.73, add 10% mark-up (which is very consertative for a stocking dealer) and you have $599.73 + $59.97 = $659.70. Finally add 6% Michigan Sales tax ($39.58) and the cost (out the door) for this gun would come to $699.28, and that is considering only a 10% dealer mark-up.
Thus the price he is selling it to me (out the door) of $700 is only $0.72 higher than the price I just computed (above).

Thus, I have to respectively disagree with you.

27 yrs ago (1982), I bought a N.I.B. Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Magnum for $450.00. Given the present state of affairs (plus 27 yrs) $700.00 doesn't sound too bad...

just my 0.02.

IMO

I'd consider selling something else and keeping the Monsoon....like a testicle!

27 years ago I bought a 44 Redhawk for $250 from a guy who shot it three times. That isn't three separate times, it is three cartridges, dropped the gun and said. . . ."never again". Gave him what he wanted on the spot. If I could find a 45 Colt, I would give $700. If I could find a .357 Redhawk I would give whatever they asked. Love Redhawks

Personally I don't like Dan Wessons, so I would sell it to get the Ruger. But that is just me. . . . . .

About 2.7 months ago I bought a 44 Mag Redhawk stainless 5.5" for $300, which included 50 rounds of JHPs, a nylon shoulder holster and a plastic MTM case.

Figure the ammo's value at $50, the shoulder rig at $20 and the case at $10, and that means the gun cost only about $220 :neener: . Granted, deals like that are tough to find, but if you can back out of this purchase (unlikely, I know) and hold out long enough, you may be able to find a used 5.5" example in the high $400s.

Thanks for all the inputs guy, however, does anybody have any idea what a Stainless Dan Wesson (6 inch heavy bbl) in .41 mag might sell for? It's in very good shape.

A friend and I ordered a SS 5.5" .45 RH several years back from our local 'pusher'. Mine was back to Ruger within days - his followed shortly. I got mine back with a new cylinder, hammer, trigger, etc by month's end. His frame was warped (Remember, they are cast!) - he got another new one - and promptly traded it. By year's end, CDNN had them on closeout for $449.

The ejector star droops - and can easily skip over the top cylinder's .45 Colt cartridge's dimunitive rim, effectively ending your shooting until you grow a third hand. The long trigger pull, a necessity due to the single spring lockwork, the GP100/SRH lockwork was a vast improvement over the RH's, etc, is speed sensitive for hammer energy. A slow pull will yield ftfs - with factory springs. You'd best like the grip size and shape. I had a .454 SRH and a 625MG to shoot .45 Colts with - the RH got little use - and was happily sold several years ago. I miss the .454 SRH - but not that RH. I have two 625MGs in .45 Colt - grouped better at 25yd than either Ruger with .45 Colts. My all-time favorite .45 Colt is the 625MG - consider it. You can likely find a good used one for less than that RH's price. Of course, if you have to have a RH...

DW 41 mag

Cayoot, I'm with the gent who would sell a 'testicle " before my Dan Wesson but, If you wish to sell it, my 28th ed.of Blue Book says a Model 741v ,If that's what you have , has a value in 100% of $ 440.00. Add a little to that 'cause my BB is 3 yrs old ,and I'd say it's at about $ 550.00.
If you want to sell it, go over to the "Dan Wesson Forum" , register , and put your q's to those guys. I'm positive you'd get some very substantial offers. They LOVE those Danny's. BeeGee

tell you what Cayoot...you want the Ruger, I will buy the DW from you (NOT THE TESTICLE) for a fair price.

Lets see, old gun in a wierd caliber that I have to ship from blue state...a hundred bucks sounds fair:evil:

Stainzs: You have really set me to thinking...I want the .45 Redhawk for it's inherent strength. I used to have a S&W Mnt Gun in .45 Colt, but I got tired of trying to keep seperate loadings for it (because it is so much weaker than my Blackhawk), that I finally sold it. I decided that if I'm going to keep down loading it, well, I might as well just load .45 AR and shoot it in my 625. The AR level seems to be about the same level as what is recommended for the Mnt Gun (in .45 Colt). So I sold the Mnt Gun.

Cayoot,

I just wanted to relate my DA .45 Colt experiences. My .454 SRH had a better trigger than the RH - and I don't remember ever having the ejector star on it skip over a rim and jam, like the RH would. I did reload a lot of .454 cases - at .45 Colt +P levels max, as I used SP primers instead of SR primers. Still, a 255gr LSWC at 950-960 fps is fine - and grouped well from that 7.5" tube. Still, it was a larger firearm - and when I was offered a swap of a LN 625-6 MG in .45 Colt for my same caliber SS 5.5" Bisley, I jumped - and my DA Ruger's days were numbered - and I had a backup 625MG - bliss.

The 25/625 series are capable of a bit more than the 14 kpsi limit - those frames, cylinders, and barrels do fine at the 21-22 kpsi level of the designed-for .45 ACP/AR. John Linebaugh, et al, have written about this over the years - and one, at least, specialty cartridge-maker even had a hunting round or two at slightly over normal .45 Colt levels. I shoot both Speer #4484 250 gr Gold Dots and 255gr LSWCs at nearly 900 fps as my max - reportedly just within the SAAMI spec's. After Venturino & Taffin had their .45 AR vs .45 Colt battle in the periodicals a few years back, I, too, found myself loading .45 AR hotter than .45 Colts - okay, same bullets, but over 900 fps! Some folks get near 1 kfps. Still, the more traditional looks of my 625MG and those big bullets make it a lot of fun.

Another reason I like my S&Ws... never found a holster for a scoped 7.5" SRH or a 5.5" RH. I have several for 4" N-frames - like my 629, 625MGs, and even the 625JM. My 627 Pro of last year fits as well. Yeah - dumb reason! Seriously, I made a conscious decision just over a year ago - and said goodbye to my Rugers, SA & DA. I have fewer handguns - but I have what I enjoy shooting. Still no regrets from last year, although the trade of my SRH, nearly five years back sometimes gives me pause... then I recall my CTS and other wrist faults - and my 61st B'day next month. YMMV - good luck!

PS I still have a box or two of homebrews that have 'RH only' on them. Interesting note... the chamber-chamber wall thickness is less on the RH than the S&W. The only significantly greater measurement of the RH is it's OAL - permits larger bullets. Then there is the cast vs forged & heat-treated... The RH was my 'largest' disappointment in a revolver. The 'smallest' was my 4" .32 H&RM SP101, but that's another story.

Stainz,
You have made some very good points. I am a big fan of the .45 Colt (in my rank of all time favorites, it is just barely 2nd to the .41 Mag).

I really enjoy shooting my 7 1/2 " Blackhawk in .45 Colt...that is my main hunting arm (loaded with #454424 SWC). I wanted to get the Redhawk because I find the 5.5" barrel to be about ideal as a woods walking length.

However, taking into account your statement about cylinder thickness as compared to a S&W 625, well I don't know how much stronger the Redhawk would be. Are you saying that the Redhawk has a cast cylinder? That is also a bit disheartening.

Would it be possible for you to point my nose in the proper direction to look into the discussions of .45 Colt Vs .45 AR? Money is not so free that I'm wanting to throw $700 on something that only duplicates what I already have.

I think I'm going to have to take a drive out to the gunshop and see if that ejector system dips down enough to leave a cartridge to get stuck under the star.

Besides....I'm really eyeing that new S&W 357 Nightguard in .41 Mag.

It seems that I am getting much more info here than I was originally hoping for!

Hey Jad0110 and Spot, what has your experiences with that Redhawk been? I find the Redhawk (not super) to be one of the more attractive handguns out there...something about the lines...

Anyways, have you guys shot them much? What do you think of the gun?

Could you post a pic of your gun, I've been wanting a DW revolver for a while.

Well, I have a pet pieve about going under 50 rounds of ammo on hand, don't know why. So I'm still waiting for my order of .44 Mag from GA Arms to arrive.

I have shot Redhawks before, and teh recoil is there, but it really isn't all that bad. It gets your attention, but it doesn't hurt at all. Quite fun to shoot, actually.

I've owned two Redhawks and one Super Redhawk. They're massive guns built like a tank and will digest the most powerful loads without a hiccup. Honestly, I was a little disappointed in the lack of recoil. (I was younger then.)

They are plenty accurate, too, although the stock trigger leaves a lot to be desired and does not lend itself to much home gunsmithing. (It's a more complicated design than say, the S&W.)

The downside is that whereas a recoil absorbing handgun is great for the target range, when carrying in the field the Redhawk/Super RH becomes quite heavy, comparatively speaking. And forget about carrying concealed unless it's winter. Even the shorter barrelled models are still huge guns.

Thanks for the link Harmonic, I got excited until I saw that that one is in .44 mag. While .44 Mag is a good caliber, it just doesn't interest me. Probably because I'm a fan of the .41 Mag and .45 Colt. I've had a couple of .44s (S&W Mnt Gun and a Dan Wesson). While they were great guns, I never really shot them much...I always grabbed the .41 or the .45 depending on the purpose I had in mind. Eventually I got rid of the .44s, cuz they had not been fired in years.
