Hello,

I need help determining the value of a Colt AR15 .223 rifle. Please pardon my ignorance of the subject as I'm rather new to guns. I figured some of the message boards would be the best way to answer the question.

A friend needs some cash and I'm helping him out by buying this rifle. The problem is I'm not sure I want to keep this. My original goal was to obtain an AK47 type and later on a .308 caliber rifle. Here goes the description:

About 2 years old, less than 100 rounds fired, "match target competition," H bar A3, factory installed muzzlebrake, 20 inch 1/7 twist, Harris adjustable bipod w/adaptor, Simmons 4-16 scope. He also installed a titanium buffer spring and firing pin. He also mentioned something about an "acu-wedge." I really have no idea what some of this means.

What can anyone tell me about this rifle? Thanks to all.

Value varies by area, and quite honestly by the circumstances. If that were on the rack at the local gun shop, they'd get maybe +/- $1,000. Simmons scopes aren't particularly expensive. Bi-pod adds a little. Muzzle brake may add some IF the buyer wants it...if not it subtracts. If our shop were to offer to buy it, maybe $600-650. If you may want to sell it later, buy it right unless he's a good friend you want to help out.

Typically in these circumstances, I'll give the guy the lower dollar and tell him that I'll put in the the back of the safe unfired. If he comes up with the cash within a year, he can have it back for the same money. If not, it's mine.

Some guys may say this is low. Depends on area

Dang that's pretty good of ya! I think your values are pretty accurate also as I have that same gun with a much better scope that I bought in '97. Without the scope but with the Harris Bipod I figure it's worth what I paid for it anyway which would be around $1k. To a dealer it's much less, of course. :)

first off , it is a colt, one of the few brands of ar's which will go up in value. It does have a great bbl on it, also the muzzle brake, the 1/7 twist on the bbl, and the titanium parts make it more pleasing. So if you were to see this in a shop for 1000 to 1200 dollars, it would not be a surprise.
