I have always owned Glocks and have never owned a Springfield XD. I am very familiar with the diff in all generations of Glocks but am not knowledgable on that of the XDs. I'm looking to trade off a Glock for a fullsize XD 45 and would like to know things I should look for or at least know going into the deal. Any helpful info is greatly appreciated.

Do some reading at xdtalk.com Lots of good info there. I've had a XDm 9mm for a year and absolutely love it. No issues and a good shooter.

I have 2 XDs, a 45 Compact and a 40 Sub-compact. Both are very accurate, very reliable and my hands well. The 40 is my usual carry.

I have a fullsized XD45 (Service) and love it! Several thousand round down the pipe and nary a hiccup! I was a huge Glock fan until I held my first XD, now I am sold on the Springfield!

Well, I have owned both. I just sold my Glock 36. Really accurate gun. Felt really nice in my hand. I currently have an XD40. It fits really good in my hand, but not quite as accurate as the Glock was. In the long run, I sold the Glock because it was a lot more $ to shoot for fun.

The only thing I can think of is if you're considering putting in a guide rod laser, Springfield made a change to the barrel and the LaserMax won't work with newer XD 45s. It won't work in my XD45 Tactical for example. Otherwise, if you don't care about that particular laser and most probably don't, I don't know of any common problems with them, and I'd like to pick up a compact to go with mine.

I only mention the guide rod laser because I have one in my Glock 27 and would've bought one for the XD if it would've fit.

I would like to point out that some XD45 models come with a thumb safety (I believe to attract LEO's?). I have the XD45C with the 4" barrel and NO thumb safety. I do not recommend the thumb safety because it is unneeded.

I can easily conceal my XD45C with a crossbreed supertuck. It is a fun shooter as well.

I recommend the tactical (5") just because you can purchase aftermarket guide rods for that size.

Have fun!

There are different models or "generations", actually more like series since there are variations within each series:

There is the XD, XDM and just released XDM 3.8. Only the XD has a .45 (hopefully that will change soon).

As far as things to know about, some XD45s have been known to ship with weak mag springs which can cause FTFs. From my research of this problem (because I experienced it) it is not very common. Also, it is easily corrected by replacing the mag springs with stronger ones. There are a few posts about this on xdtalk.com. I purchased AGP +20 springs and this corrected the problem for me. This does not seem to be an issue with the other calibers.

Overall I think the XD45 is a great gun. It's what I carry.

I have carried a glock for 12 years on duty. 10 years was a 21(45). Last 2 years a 23 (40 compact). I personally favor Springfields. I have the compact 4" with extended magazine and grip filler. I carry it with the short 10 rd and no extension in winter. I would carry a subcompact but they don't make one in 45 so I use a glock 36. In the 45 nothing has changed. It is relatively new. One thing that may throw you off is the trigger compared to a glock. It is a hair more poundage, a little longer travel and grainy. I did a little polishing on mine and got it going pretty well. Make sure you can live with the trigger before you switch to an xd. Personally I favor the XD but I don't know that I would if not a gunsmith and able to work the bugs out of the trigger. It is not terrible factory, I am just very picky.

Find one at a fair price and buy it. I'd skip the thumb safety too. I have owned 3 XD's in 3 different configurations and liked them all.

The only thing I can think of is if you're considering putting in a guide rod laser, Springfield made a change to the barrel and the LaserMax won't work with newer XD 45s.

IMO, the Crimson Trace laser looks better anyway.

I like that the XD has a grip safety. It doesn't require an extra movement before it can fire, but makes it less likely a snag on the trigger will cause problems when holstering it IWB.

XD 45 Compact is my every day carry and is incredibly accurate. I've had zero feed or eject issues with a variety of factory and hand loads. This is my 5th XD and each one has been absolutely reliable and very very accurate.

I also own an Officer's model 1911 that was my every day carry before I got the XD compact. I made a paper outline of both guns and the XD IS a bit longer...but the length is in the barrel while the grip/slide portion that rides outside the waistband in a Crossbreed ( I have supertucks for the XD and 1911) is actually less. I took calipers to grips on both the XD (double stack .45) and the 1911 and found that the grip width was really not all that much different either. I forget the actual measurements, but the bottom line is that that XD 45 compact carries just as easily for me as the compact 1911, with more capacity.

I have the 9mm XDM, bi-tone XD 45 compact, and 9mm subcompact with night sights. No issues with any of them. If you are buying a used one, make sure the serial numbers of the frame, slide and barrel match.
