I'm trying to make a choice between only one of the following to Model 27-2 revolvers, in terms of the best one for both desireability to own as well as to collect? Although I realize that an 5-inch barrel length is generally more desireable for collectibility that an 6-inch barrel, I'm wondering whether or not, by current standards, if an equally mint blue 6-inch 27-2 might be equal or even more collectible than an same vintage(N-serial number prefix)nickel 5-inch 27-2? Following are the two specimen Model 27-2's in question? Please cast your vote for the best choice to own and to collect? Both revolvers are in wood presentation cases and are equally mint and are complete with all accessories and tools!:

+1 on the 5" nickel. Although, like GunNut said, both are awesome.

You've definately got yourself a "Ginger or Mary Ann" type predicament there.

A no lose situation if I ever saw one but I like the 5" nickel myself ;)

Please continue with your opinions-as only five opinions so far isn't enough to declare a winner between these two guns, in terms of their desireability and their collectibility!:banghead:

I'd go with the 5" nickel.

Generally speaking, only about 10% of S & W revolvers were nickel plated, so they are less common, and thus more "collectible". I have heard that the 5 inch presentation boxes are also relatively scarce and are collector items. The one in your picture appears to be in pretty good shape.

You didn't mention the prices of the two guns you are considering, so I assume cost is not a factor in your decision. From my experience, the nickel 5" will usually be worth $100-$200 than a similar condition blue 6".

Good luck on your decision. You can't go wrong with either one.

I know nothing about collectability, and have over four decades of discarding boxes and original grips, among other things, to prove it.

I do like the balance of a 5" 27 better for shooting though, if that's worth anything to you.

I would be happy with any of them, but I have a friend who has delt in smith revolvers for many years and he says nickle is bringing a higher price.
