Needing Help With Reloading

I'm sorry to repost this in order to get my thoughts known.


I am reloading: 44 mag, 45 ACP and 45 Auto Rim.

Looking for a load or loads that would be just for plinking.

And a load or loads for home defense.

I have the following powers on hand:
Alliant Unique, Hodgdon Tightgroup, Winchester AutoComp and Winchester 296.

I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Don't you have the Lyman reloading book? It' a main stay for any reloader.

I second that advice! I get all of my loads from the following;

Lyman 49th(50th is now available)
Sierra handbook if using Sierra bullets
Hornady handbook, if using Hornady bullets
Lyman Cast Bullet handbook if using cast bullets.

The worst thing you can do is use recipes that are not printed/published, its bad practice! After all its your gun, your hands and your face so protect them! Although I'm sure there is no one on here that would give you a dangerous recipe its just good practice to verify any and all loads with published data.

The powder manufacturers have published data on line and I use that a lot when shopping for powders and I confirm the manuals with those published loads quit often.

What bullets are you planning to use? Or, is this part of your question?

Unique has been good to me in 44 Mag and 45 ACP.

7-10 gr of unique under any bullet 240gr or less in a 44 mag case is a very good plinking load. Just dial your recoil up or down

Unique is hard to double load, but TiteGroup is so easy if you scan each case.

Get atleast the single caliber book if you don't get the normal reloading book. That book has many different manufacturers specs & load data for the caliber

No, at least get the Lyman #49.

(There is a new #50 out just now, but I haven't seen one yet to recommend it.)

If you have Unique, you have the only powder you need to load all the calibers you mentioned.

Start by buying a couple of different reloading manuals. follow the loads in the manuals and adjust them until you find what works for your gun.
