Neep help planning a benefit shoot. Idea's please

So like the title says. We are in the planning stages of putting together the ultimate hunter benefit shoot.

All proceeds will go to benefit Kansas farmers and hunters feeding the hungry.

So here is what we are thinking. It will be a multiple day event, probably lasting the course of two or three weekends. Yikes I know.

Each two man team will compete in the following

40 target 3-d archery shoot

one round (50) shots each sporting clays

Hunting handgun which means a handgun legal for hunting big game in the state of Kansas. Which is any centerfire handgun cartridge with a bullet diameter of at least .23 inches and a case length exceeding one inch.

(5) shots 50 yards two hand standing
(5) shots 60 yards kneeling
(5) shots 75 yards sitting with shooting stix

Hunting rifle

Like handgun any centerfire rifle legal for big game hunting in Kansas. NO bench guns will be allowed.

(5) shots 100 yards offhand
(5) shots kneeling 150 yards
(5) shots sitting at 200 yards

Small game rifle

Open to .22lr, .22 WMR, .17 HMR, .17 Mach 2

(5) shots 25yards offhand
(5) shots 50 yards kneeling
(5) shots 75 yards sitting

The event will be scored on the honor system.

Each team must shoot each event to claim the title of best hunting partners.

The event will conclude with a wildgame feast. Bring a side dish type thing. We will provide venison, hog, elk, duck, geese, quail, stag and whatever else we might take between here and then. Plus a live band

Door prizes will be awarded and the top team will probably take home a new rifle and shotgun. The winning team chooses who gets what.

So right now we are just bouncing ideas off each other. Since the fine folks at THR love shooting stuff what do you all think.

Are we limiting to many folks because of archery and or handgun.

Cost is estimated at $75-$100 per person.

Any ideas are more than welcome.

We have also thought of having a good ole boy 3 gun

.22lr
shot gun
deer rifle.

Same basic setup but 10 rounds each position with the .22 and deer rifle.

Been involved in many over the years.....here's some thoughts.

1) Make plans for both good & bad weather....be prepared for the worse.
2) Find sponsors to help underwrite the cost, donors, door prizes, food costs, etc.
3) Check the calendar, avoid conflicts with other popular events, mothers day, Easter, football games, holiday weekends, etc.
4) Have plenty of help (figure 10-15 volunteers for every 100 in attendance) and a way to thank them (T-shirts, hats, etc).
5) Try to anticipate challenges in scoring and how to resolve them.
6) Takes about 6-12 months preparation prior to the event.
7) Try to do all your events in one day (two at the most)....makes scheduling and getting help easier.

The only conflict we are having with having the event in one weekend. We do not have any one venue that can accomodate all events we want.

A 40 rounds 3-d shoot takes a fair amount of a day. 4-5 hours on average.
So this event will be held on a normal shoot day at the archery club.

Ravenwood has sporting clays but no real area for rifle shooting.

We have talked about setting up in my buddies feild for the rifle/pistol events. Which is only 5 miles from the sporting clays venue.

Problem is he has a range built with a great backstop. However we can only handle 3 shooters at a time.

The sporting clay range will give us a break on rounds.
The archery club will give us a pretty good break on the 3-d
Rifle and pistol shooting will be pretty cheap. Only providing targets


The two archery pro-shops will help sponsor the event
One of the local gun shops will also
The band is free
The food will be donated


We have had shoots in the past but nothing as large as planned.

One of the events we had featured two sporting clays courses, a number of Hollywood celebrities, and filmed for a Cable Outdoors show. Problem was physically getting the large numbers of shooters through the course. Figure how much time it takes to do a venue then divide that into 6-8 hours. That gives you a pretty good idea of what the maximum number of shooters you can have. People will not attend if they have to wait hours to shoot. They came to shoot, not sit around watching & waiting for others to clear the range.

If the events are staggered you'll need to schedule those in such a way to maximize the time you have.....so no one waits to shoot. Take into account people that drive long distances, they'll be the first to want to get back on the road after participating. A 40 target 3D shoot will take at least 2 hours to complete.....that's going to limit the number of people you can accommodate.

The 3-d course we will use takes roughly 4 hours to complete. It has three starting points. Targets 1-20, 21-30, 31-40 whole course covers 1 1/2 miles of trails. Great course.

The sporting clays course has a 10 minute stagger for groups of 4

The rifle range we are thinking about using can handle 15 shooters on the line at the rifle range and 20 shooters on handgun

Problem happens when all three venues are at least 18 miles apart.

The concluding event would be held at the sporting clays venue.
