Each spring our club hosts an Inter-club shoot. Clubs from the surrounding area put together one or two five man teams to compete in 6 different events designed to test the participants in various disciplines. This actually started as a 4 event competion but has evolved into 6 events. The events are as follows.

1) Trap-Each shooter will shoot a standard round of trap, 25 birds, and will be awarded 1 point for each bird hit for a total possible score of 25 points.

2) Falling Plates/Speed Pistol- Each shooter will attempt to knock down 12 falling plates from a distance of 15 yards as quickly as possible. Shooters will be required to shoot 6, perform a reload and, shoot 6 more. A miss will result in a 3 second penalty. The shooter with the fastest time will be awarded a score of 25 points and all other shooters scores are graded on a curve.

3) .22 Silhouette rifle- Shooters will have a total of 4 minutes to engage a total of ten targets, chickens, pigs, turkeys and, rams, at 100 yards. Each downed target is worth 2.5 points for a total possible score of 25 points.

4) Standing Deer- Shooters will engage a scored standing deer target from a distance of 100 yards. Each shot is worth up to 5 points for a total possible score of 25 points. Shooter must shoot off-hand. Slings and shooting jackets not allwed. Rifle must be a centifire deer legal caliber. No rimfires allowed.

5) Silhouette pistol-Shooters must engage 10 Silhouette chickens at 40 meters. Shooters will be allowed 2 minutes to shoot 5 targets then 2 more minutes to shoot the second 5 targets. Each downed target is worth 2.5 points for a total possible score of 25 points. Currently, shooters are only allowed to use open sighted .22 caliber pistols. I see no reason that this cannot be changed to allow open sighted centerfire pistols and will be moving to have this changed.

6) Shotgun Run Speed event- This event was added only last year and was taken from Cowboy Action Shooting and adapted to allow modern shotguns. It is basically a town clearing scenario which involves the shooter starting with an empty shotgun in hand. At the beep the shooter will load and engage between 2 and 6 targets. He will then move to another position and engage more targets then move again and engage more targets. The scenario will require shooter to engage from 12-18 targets. All knock downs must be knocked down which means shooter must re-engage target until target goes down. Bring extra shells. If poppers are involved, flying targets, and they will be:D, missed birds will be assessed a 5 second penalty. Shooters will be required to move probably at least 3 times. The stage will be scored the same way as the speed pistol round. When developing this stage we wanted to make it as friendly as possible so as to allow shooters to use what they allready owned without having to buy more equipment. That is why shooters are currently only allowed to load 2 rounds at a time just as they are in Cowboy Action Shooting. The guy shooting a Mossberg 590 has no real advantage over someone shooting an over and under trap gun. Any of you who shoot Cowboy action matches knows someone with a double who is faster than most with their pumps.

As you can see these events and the equipment required to shoot them vary widely. Each type of firearm, rifle, pistol, and shotgun, are employed twice, though, at least in the case of the pistol and the shotgun, in two entirely different manners. This a great event that I and others like me look forward to as a great way to kick off the shooting season. As you might have guessed by now youcan be a worl class speed demon with a pistol but if you aren't at least decent with a rifle and a shotgun you won't be in the running for top gun. The guy who is well rounded with all three types of firearms is the one to watch out for. This is when the "Jack of all Trades" kinda guy gets to win one.

Anyway, if you are not asleep yet, I wrote this to let you know what we do and to ask if any of you have any similar events that your club puts on. Any ideas as far as different rifle events, especially a timed event, would be greatly appreciated. Please tell us what your club does. Events like help boost membership and, more often than not, get shooters to try other disciplines. The first time I evershot trap or falling plates was a week before this event. Somone had asked me to be on their team cause they knew I was good with a rifle and pistol. I shot rap for about 3 years after that and occasionally get to a falling plates match. There were a lot people who didn't want to add the Shotgun Run last year because they thought some of the shooters would be intimidated. It was probably our most popular event. Some of the guys were dying to try Cowboy Action Shooting after that. Anyway tell me what you do.:D

Sounds like fun. Used to shoot in B and Arrow comps. I shoot clay birds with friends all the time. We swap out at which persons farm we go to. The owner does most of the throwing and see if they can mess the other people up. Friendly comp makes a person a better shot.
