I am looking at a Mossberg 500 that is for sale for $250. Here are the details, quoted from the seller:

"Selling a very nice condition mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun. It is in essentially new condition and has hardly been shot. I'm original owner. This is a great versatile package - includes 18 1/2' barrel for home defense and a 28' barrel for hunting/clays."

I feel like $250 is a good deal, but as nobody in my family has a shotgun, I have nobody to give me that second opinion. What do you all think? Is this a great deal, or just an okay deal?

I appreciate the advice.

Since you're getting a 2nd barrel it seems like a decent price. Look to see if that 28" barrel is one with interchangeable chokes, and which chokes it comes with. That would make the deal even better for you.

mossy 250.......

good deal.?.......this combo sells 4 299.00 new on sale at dicks or dunham's............mossberg is low end reliability......personally i would search around for the best deal on new merchandise in my area and then make an offer accordingly .....good luck.....

Years ago when I had my FFL, I bought a Mossberg 500 cruiser. My wholesale cost was $169 25 ears ago, so $200 sounds pretty good after all this time.
If it is in good shape, buy it

I gave 200 dealer 20 years ago for my OEM camo 28" 500. Think retail was about 300, but was extra for the camo. I'm a waterfowler, had to have the cool camo. :D It is a rugged finish, though, fights the rust well and I prefer the plastic stocks for this use. The salt marsh is a rough environment.

I have a Mossberg 500. It's simple, it's cheap, it's versatile, and rugged. $250 with the 28" and the 18.5" barrel is a good deal if everything is like new. You can get a wooden stocked 500 with 28" barrel for around $230 at Walmart. That 18.5" barrel is going to be another $80 online. Factor in $18 sales tax for the gun, and $10 shipping for the barrel and you are close to $350. $250 leaves you $100 for 300 shells and a recoil pad.

Always negotiate/haggle, just on principle, but with two barrels in as new condition that sounds like an OK deal as offered. There's nothing at all wrong with the quality of the Mossberg 500, they are an inexpensive shotgun but definitely not cheap. I prefer an open ended magazine tube as on the Mossberg 590s for a serious shotgun, but millions of owners (including me) are happy with Mossberg 500s.

mossberg is low end reliability

Andrewstorm.....where is your proof on this? 500's are some of the most reliable shotguns EVER made and I'm not even a fan of Mossbergs.

Nothing chaps my hide more than misinformation to new shooters.

Got a Mossberg 500 in 20 ga, and I have never had a problem with it.

$250.00 with a spare barrel is okay, if it is like NIB (New in the box). I bought my 500 for $200 and change at walmart. So they can be had for less, but the spare barrel sweetens the deal. If he carves $20 off the price (perhaps likely) I'd take it, depends on how well the gun fits you.

If you get there and pick it up and it feels like part of you, pay the $250. A shotgun that fits you is priceless.

nothing verbally challenging andrew. the way you wrote it came across as bottom of the reliability scale, nothing about cost in those 5 words.
mossberg is low end reliability

back on topic, occasionally I see the 500 with 2 barrels for sale new around $375ish

doesnt sound like that bad of a deal to me.

low end does refer to cost

Low end is a term that describes an amount of money, low end cars for instance are the hyundai vw ,high end would be Mercedes,Cadillac, such as the high road means a forum of hgher interaction sorry for the misunderstanding, but mossberg does produce the most inexpensive pump shotgun made in America

i know its local but here in michigan moss 500 combos show up on sale NEW for 299-325 at wal-mart or dunhams.

great guns, i currently own 4 mossberg 500s. in the lower half of our state we are limited to shotguns for hunting deer so ive had them all my life. one ive owned for over 20 years and killed at least 2 dozen deer with

there inexpensive and durable, IMO.. the only comparable gun would be a rem 870 which will cost you at least 100 more. i like the safety better on the 870 but im not willing to pay the extra for it

Not a screaming great deal, but a decent price. If as advertised, buy it.

Not sure what the current MSRP is for the Mossberg 500 Combo. Mossbergs and Mavericks are inexpensive, but definitely not 'Cheap'...Read 'Cheap' as very roughly made and poor quality.

I have bet my bacon on a Maverick 88 for 20+ years, and it has not let me down. Put just as much game on the table as my brothers with their much more expensive Rem 870/1100's

Maverick is Mossberg's value-price-point-entry-level shotgun.
