New 1911 GI 45

My brother has one like yours, and I couldn't resist the hi-cap model myself. There are a few things that I rather strongly dislike about both of them, but I agree that they're good pistols overall.
I hope this isn't your first one, or you're about to enter a world where you have no money, more 1911s than teeth, and smell of powder and Hoppes all the time. These guns, more than any other, seem to inspire a boyish desire to "collect the whole set." Just wait until you bring home a new baby who was languishing, all alone, in a gun shop display case only to hear your wife/girlfriend say "don't you have one like that already?" Trust me, it is not worth it to try to explain to her that this one is, in fact, the parkerized model with tritium sights, a beveled magwell, and a beavertail while that other one is the blued model with GI sights, walnut grips, and the accuracy bushing. Implying that she is stupid for not knowing the difference will not help the situation, either.

Or, that this one is a .45 while that one's a .38 Super and the one over there is a 10mm...

This is not my first pistol. But I think the SA Mil Spec or GI 45 is a good buy for your money.
I have several revolvers, and a 9mm, However, I always wanted to get a 1911.
I am really glad the pistol functions well in its most basic form. I was kind of worried about that with all the bells and whistles people attach to their 1911s.
The kick is definately different than a 44 mag. It seems less sharp, and is pretty controllable.
The hammer didnt bite or pinch the web of my hand.
I think I do need some new grips though...

I;ve got one too. I just ran another 300 rds through it this past weekend. Not a single hitch. Pretty accurate as well.
One note on grips... I had all of the pretty, aftermarket grips I could find on there, and promptly took them off and came to the conclusion that there really is nothing better and more comfortable than the slim, checked, wooden grips it came with.
You're also going to get the Rock Island guys telling you that you made a mistake. Funny, because my shooting buddy had one this past trtip, and his was was innacurate, and jangled more than a janitor's keyring.

Congrats on the SA GI. You got yourself a great pistol. The 1911 platform will require slightly more maintenance. But once familiarizing yourself with the 1911 platform, as long as you properly maintain the gun, that SA GI will treat you right.
You got yourself quite a nice shooter.
P.S. This is your first 1911, but it certainly wont be your last.

1911's are indeed an illness, the symptoms are only relieved by trigger time and the occasional purchase of another one. Then you'll want to customize. And do some horsetrading. And start reloading so you can shoot more. And wonder why your paychecks suddenly seem so much smaller.
I'm trying to develope a 12 step program, but am hampered by the fact that I don't want to quit.

that's how it begins... then comes an EGW barrel bushing, tighter barrel link, Wilson Drop in BT, flat MSH, Commander Hammer, 3 hole trigger, extended safety, hex head grip screws, bullet proof slide stop, new sights, front strap checkering with an S&A BT, refinish job... and it all starts with new grips.

Welcome to the club. I think we should put together a support group.... I am not sure what happened but I put 2 in my safe and when I woke up there was a commander model in the middle. I have tried to explain it to the wife but she is having a hard time believing me.
I told her she may want to keep a very close eye on the safe next month.... There is a gun show in town.

New grips? Get the Crimson Trace Lasergrips - I love 'em on my GI45. You've got grips with a purpose... and a laser. If you have to blast night-prowling critters, it's a great tool - that dot stands out great.
The .45s recoil isn't bad at all, unless you're new to handgun shooting. If you are, a hundred or so rounds of hardball leaves you with a sore spot on your hand.

Shot 1911s in the Army and loved it. Had them ever since. In my book they rock . Springfield Rocks.

The GI45 is one of the best deals in guns today, and for a basic no frills new 1911, the absolute best deal. You chose wisely.

I have been reloading for about a year, and reload for all my guns.
When I bought this gun I did not have any dies to reload 45 ACP (They are on order).
So I bought 3 boxes of commerical, and they cost 15.00 each!
I have picked up a bunch of extra brass, plus kept what I have already shot, and should be reloading for the next range trip.
As a side note: If you plan on shooting regularly, it is worth your while to reload. My son and I shoot 44 mag, 357 mag, and now 45. We have recognized considerable savings on "rolling your own".
Well - I don't know if I am actually saving money, because we shoot more with the reduced cost of reloaded ammo.

399 is less than I paid for mine. That sounds like a very good buy, and I would definately recommend them.
I have heard positive comments on their customer support as well, but hopefully I will not need them.

Look out for the MilSpec, About $100 more than the GI with larger sights, lowered and flared ejection port. Both are great guns. I don't class these as cheap guns.. Just Inexpensive ones. There are a lot of great choices for budget minded 1911 fans these days. SA, RIA and now Taurus are all quality 1911s
