I just received some brand new Hornady 30-30 brass. My question is if it measures extremely close to factory 30-30 ammo do I need to re-size, and trim before loading for the first time? The only reason I ask is I do not have any way to trim cases just yet, and am waiting on a case prep center to come off of back order.

The length is dead on factory Hornady FTX. So do you prep new rifle brass same as once fired, or do you load it once with out the prep?

New Brass

I have heard of a few who try without sizing and as long as they fit and feed go ahead with the lot without sizing. Personally, I size all new brass. However until brass reaches the max length there is no need to trim IMHO. Benchresters will usually trim all to as exact same length as possible before ever reloading.

Thanks for the replies I went ahead and sized it all. Tumbled real quick. And primed. Now I just have to wait for my powder delivery.

Always resize new brass to insure all is as it should be. Trim as needed and debur. Treat it like once fired brass...

I would, also, tumble it to remove any left over burs [and to make it shinny]...

Did u measure after sizing? sometimes brass 'grows'during the resizing operation.IF it's beyond max, don't load and shoot it.

With new brass I always size, trim to "trim to length". That way I know it is good to go. If it is below max length after sizing you should be okay tho.

Kentucky Jelly if you are shooting these in a tube feed rifle make sure you are getting a good enough crimp with your irregular length brass to prevent set back.

i actually dont resize new brass so that it might be safer for spacing or fit. i actually do it to take out any neck damage or dents. that being said....i guess i do size it all but its usually just neck sizing if i have that die.

Flash holes

Flash holes. you have to check the flash holes. If you already primed oh well. A lot of time the flash holes will have bures in them. Especially inside the brass. REsizing with full length dies and de priming pin can usually cure. However sometimes you need to look inside the holes you will see excess brass around the flash hole a skinny screw driver can usually pry them back or off. Still like Bushmaster said. I full size, check trim debur and chamfer then check the flash holes. Treating all the brass the same and checking flash holes and primer pockets ensures a uniformly made brass and ensures the best accuracy.

Thanks for the tip Scrat. I did full length size with a decapping pin. I can still check the inside of the flash hole as my powder has not shipped yet. I never thought about checking the inside.

The brass did grow .01-.03, but all acceptable. I will trim on the 2nd round. These will be mainly to break in a new rifle.

Doug b. I am using a Lee Factory crimp die. These will be shot in a Marlin 336.
