The following is just a footnote of history that I thought might be of interest:

American Rifleman February, 1948 page number-14 an article titled “New .45 Safety”. Quoting from the article:

“With the addition of one part and one essential minor alteration, the .45 caliber M1911 automatic pistol safety will prevent firing of the chambered load when the clip is removed”

“The problem which Captain Quinn and Mr. McDonie tackled, to state briefly, was to fix the .45 automatic pistol so that it would not fire a round in the chamber when the clip was removed and to do this without impairing the military efficiency. They were not the first to attempt this but previous inventions either had been impossible of application to existing weapons or else had been too complicated and expensive. The invention which they have turned up with is extremely simple and does the job well. These qualities make it out standing."
