I currently have a M38 from 1968-1969. I like the gun am pleased with the gun. I am just thinking of selling it and purchasing a new 442. The only reason I can think of other than it will be a new gun is that it will be +p rated. I know I can shoot limited +p through my M38 but I worry that one day I may surpass the limited (?) and cause damage. I like the way the new 442's feel and the lock doesnt really bother me. I like the wide front site.I like the feel of the trigger as well. I figure with the rebate I can sell mine add a few bucks and get a new one. I wonder am I just complicating things.

I think you may be complicating things.

First of all, +P is not that great of a thing. Its biggest advantage is not that is it marginally more powerful but rather that it makes it so your gun can shoot more of the available ammo on the store shelf. THat is a bigger advantage than most people give credit for.

Still though, I can look past this. There is plenty of standard pressure ammo out there to practice with. Another thing to consider is that when this gun was built the standard pressure 38 ammo would produce more pressure than todays +P. This should give you some confidnece with the M38s ability to digest it.

My own M38, I shoot standard pressure factory ammo and reloads from it most of the time. I have shot 5 +P rounds through it and I have it loaded with them right now with full confidence in its functionality.

I would never in a million years trade an older pre lock Smith for a new one. If you want to spend a little money on a gun send that one back to Smith for a tune up and then you willl have a basically new old gun that will have many rounds of +P in its future.

And now for the obliglatory picture.

Im really think for the money I would spend. I could buy a set of Crimson Trace grips either 105's or 405's, or a set of nice wood boot grips, springs, ammo and probably another holster.
