Ok guys I have the choice of either a new as in this year make 870 or a early 1990s model which would you take and why same price btw thanks horsemen61

Meh, doesn't really matter, as long as they're the same model. If it's a 90's Wingmaster or a new Express, get the Wingmaster. If it's two Expresses or two Wingmasters, just be thorough when you check them out, and pick whichever you like best.

Though I have to ask, why buy a used 870 for the same price as a new one?

I'd buy an 90's model Wingmaster at the same price as a new Express. If both are Wingmaster or if both are Express I'd buy the new model.

LGS is still selling used 870s for about $250, less if it's got surface wear. I also agree that I'd take a used Wingmaster over a new 870.

I bought an express the other day for $180 OTD. I see Wing Masters frequently for sale that top $400 if they are in real good shape and 3" so there is quite a bit of difference in price. If they were both the same I'd buy the new one.
I have to ask why the seller is asking either so much more for the used or so much less for the new? That answer might tell me if I was going to buy from him or not.

Buy newer than 1995. Around this time, there was a class action lawsuit on the barrels bursting. After about 1995 the steel used for the barrels was changed.

The barrel lawsuit was a big ruse by lawyers looking to get money, and as usual they did. The details of the settlement are sealed. There was no safety recall either.

= No!

Class action settlements cannot be sealed, otherwise how would the class members know that there was a settlement that binds them.

Back to the OP's original point. I'd go with a used in good condition every time. My new express needed quite a bit of breaking in. I'm still not sure it is 100% reliable. And at least for me AK-47 type reliability was why I bough an 870 in the first place.

Any 870. Yes the older Wingmasters are best but, with some chamber/barrel polishing, changing from Non-MIM to forged extractor, and changing out carrier dog follower spring and magazine spring to police type extra power springs, an Express can be just as good.

I own 6 870s, Express, Police, and Wingmaster, dating from 1982 to 2010, and I trust all of them.

i help clean 10 rem 870 expresses used by a lot of youth groups for one of the gun clubs i belong to, and they have had thousands of shells run threw them over the last 15-20 years and they have had very few problems after the abuse they have suffered from the kids useing them. i don,t know any other shotguns that would have done better and the price for the remingtons expresses was very good(local walmart sold them for their cost to the club). eastbank. eastbank.

Once you find yourself buying 870's it seems there are deals everywhere. Last 870 I bought, 2 3/4" Wingmaster, had a crapped up stock and rusted barrel. Since I had a box of 870 parts, barrels and stocks at home I snapped it up. $140 at a pawn shop. Shoots fine.:D

The newer ones equipped with 'Light Contour' barrels are by far the best choice.

If your planning on using it for water foul, the older one's don't hold up to steel shot very well. Other wise, i would be most interested in the older WM's.

Why on earth would a used 870 cost the same as a new one?

There are racks and racks of used police riot 870's at my LGS for $269. Cosmetically need some attention. But parkerized and wood, 3" chamber and 18" barrel.
Except for real old ones the more modern parkerized 'Police Magnums' are basically 870 Express clunkers. The Remington 870 'Light Contour' is best upland pump 12ga Remigton has EVER made. I was shocked to realize in handling it came very close to legendary Winchester Model 12 16ga repeater. That is astonishing when one realizes it's 12ga with vent rib and Rem-choked barrel.
Not to worry the best 12ga wildfowl pump gun ever made was the Winchester Model 12 3" magnum. I passed on 30" one in excellent condition with Winchester/Browning Std Invector chokes installed for only $600. I will always regret not buying that gun.:(

Get the oldeer wingmaster. I bought a 1984 Wingmast last year for $400. Beautiful shotgun and works flawlessly, very smooth too.

In my opinion it was the best hammerless repeater made period! It's what I cut my teeth on with a pump gun. I don't own one today though as a couple decades ago attorney fees ate up my entire gun collection and I had to start anew.

I like the English stocked 870 upland special field and 1100 special. My cousin had the 1100 SF and I own the 870 SF, but mine has a fixed full choke VR barrel so it's basically a turkey slayer until I find an open choke barrel for it or finally give in and have it threaded for tubes as no other 870 barrels are interchangeable with it. I've had it for years and have only found a modified barrel for sale, but I keep holding out for an Imp. cyl.
