So, a couple weeks ago I ordered and installed a magpul MOE stock and handguard on my CDD-15 as well as a set of Magpul flip-ups and an AFG

WELL, after their installation, I realized that a couple of more things needed to be addressed... FIRST, my front flip up sat too low on the existing gas block.. SO, a riser was necessary to bring it up to the appropriate height... Then, and I am not sure how I missed this on my first order, I realized that I "needed" a magpul pistol grip to match the stock and handguard...

SO, For your viewing pleasure!!!!!

I really like it.. Provides, for me, a great cheek weld and I like the position and "stiffness" of the release lever. The stock has a very little wobble, but nothing like I have heard some people complain. IMO, it is a huge improvement over every factory option I have handled. I havent used the CTR. I imagine I would be pleased with it as well... From what I can tell it only provides an additional lock the stock in place. Everything else... seemingly, is the same.

you're not supposed to mount an MBUS directly onto a gasblock. they can melt

I am aware of that possibility, but the hope is that the riser (which dissipates heat faster via air flow beneath the riser) will act as a sort of heat buffer between the gas block and the sight. Also, I am not one for much rapid fire but will def. keep an eye on it nonetheless.

I appreciate it roughneck08... I am really happy with the way it turned out.. I also like the ability to interchange frontstraps, backstraps, and cores in this pistol grip.... it is a bit rougher than I am used to, but I like it.

I like the contrast of everything Flat dark earth touching black... and everything black touching Flat dark earth... I just felt it added another dimension to the gun rather than having the AFG just blending to the gun... I am pleased with the way it turned out.

The riser will probably help - a little. A phenolic resin or other hi temp automotive grade resin might help more by transmitting less heat.

It's one of those finesse points, makers put on low blocks because flip ups were originally tall enough to do it - they made the height work out. Now front sights are more commonly sold for quad rails 1/4" taller - and don't work on the older style gas blocks. And the taller rail height gas blocks may not fit under the quad rails, so the maker chooses the lesser of two conflicts and installs low.

The gas block and front sight descriptions don't always come right out and say what height it is, but it's obviously important.

I appreciate that information Tirod... I was trying to figure out where the gas block came from... as it stands, the riser only makes direct contact with the gas block in two places (each side) and otherwise there is an allowance of air flow beneath it, but I will look into the further precautions you mentioned.

Not bad looking at all. :D
One thing of note however. Magpul warns people not to put the MBUS on a Gas block rail like you have done. I don't know if it will truly be a problem or not. But I have seen Drake caution against it a few times.

I will put her through er paces next week and include some rapid fire to see how the front sight/riser setup tolerates the heat and update accordingly.

i appreciate the compliments, I am very pleased with the look and feel of the setup... HOPEFULLY, the front sight setup will work appropriately and as I expect.

Why would it melt the sight but not the handgaurd?

Because the plastic handguard isn't touching the gas block and the sight was.

Now he's using a riser. His thought is that the riser will act as a heat shield for the sight. Personally, I think the riser will act as a heat sink.

I would take it out to the range with the front sight removed, dump a magazine and feel how hot that riser gets just to be safe. Either that or go to metal sights but I'm sure that defeats the purpose of going with the MBUS and that's because they're inexpensive.

HOPEFULLY, the front sight setup will work appropriately and as I expect.

I hope so too because that's an awesome looking rifle. It's seriously making me double think my furniture selection on mine.

I have a flat top DPMS and I went O.D. Green Magpul furniture. Every time I see a MOE handguard I gringe but yours looks great on that rifle.

Just to give an update, the sight configuration worked very well... There have been no signs of any sort of issues with the front sight weakening as a result of heat transfer from the front gas block... Good to know as i will now have to start over from scratch as yesterday my CDD-15 magically transformed into a Remington 700P...:D

What can I say, i couldnt help but notice that I had glaring gap in my collection... a heavy bolt action 308.... somewhat fitting i suppose that it comes in the form of a M-700.
