Got a screaming deal on cyber Monday on a 16" AR from ARFCOM. Usually $999, marked down to $650. Quad rail, forged lower.

So anyway, I decide to clean/lube it before I start shooting. BCG is nice and clean. I run a patch with #9 thru the bore. Comes out totally black. Kinda odd, but not a biggie. Go thru 11 patches, with the last still dirty. Not as bad, but dirty still,

I decide to take the easier route and shoot in some Wipe-Out. That'll clean it up. Do the wait time, then run another patch. Total blue.....it looks like it's been soaked in dark blue ink.

Now, this is sold as a new rifle and looks totally new. I assume that it's gonna be test fired and not cleaned up. The copper just has me puzzled. Maybe it's not a lot. Patches sure looked blue.

Haven't shot it yet. Think I'm gonna mount a 6.5-20x40 that I already have in a Deadnutz mount to get it sighted/broken in

Thoughts??

I have heard of using blue penetrating dye to look for cracks. Maybe that's it?

Possible the maker doesn't plug the barrel when parkerizing? There's a popular, entry-level 1911 brand that does that and you'll get plenty of dark color out of a new barrel when cleaning...

I have also had a darned dirty bore on a new rifle. It happens. More important to me would be how does it shoot. Even if someone test fired it 50 shots it is still basically new.

curious to see how it shoots.

copper is normally a greenish blue, not a dark blue ink type color. i'd be kind of surprised if there's that much copper in the bore already. doesn't seem possible, even if they test fired it

look at the face of the bolt and see if you can tell if it's been fired.

Whole BCG looks new to me. There was one very tiny spec of brass on the bolt face. Other than that, nothing I could see. Dunno

Weather here is in single digits right now, so I'm not real excited about going out to shoot. Maybe tomorrow if I get antsy. Maybe I'll just put a couple down the barrel and do another deep clean to check it out

Everybody have a Merry Christmas tomorrow

Probably end up with an Aimpoint or EOTech. Already have BUIS mounted. Just want to see what it will do with good sights precision sights. Not gonna leave it on

i'm interested to see how it shoots as well. i've had dirty bores from new rifles, but this sounds exceptional.

mount that scope up and brave the weather! i shoot in single digits all the time. :D o also like to use a higher powered optic to test run new rifles and see what they're capable of, even if i intend to only run irons after.

that's interesting. never used wipe-out. why would it change teh color?

I'll put thru maybe 100-200 rounds and see how it shoots. Then use some good, proven hand loads that consistently shoot 1/2" in my varminter.

I have a friend that was trying to sight in his AR. "Groups" were maybe +/- six inches. Is that the scope, the gun, the ammo, operator error?? In his case I used my hand loads and immediately dropped the groups to about 1".

If this won't shoot better than six inches with super good loads and a good scope, pretty much tells me it's the gun. Eliminates a lot of variables right up front.

Try'n to clean the blue from the nitrite will drive you nuts.
Short drive.

Yep. That's it. Had no idea about the nitriding/color.

Looks like it's time to burn some ammo. Range report to follow

thx

Nitride is the same as the process used on sig and most other gun slides. It won't produce colors on your patches. The blue on the patches is from copper. Just a few shots can produce enough copper fouling to make a patch blue with wipe-out. Heck the tail of my bolt even turns wipe-out blue.
