New AR style AK sight from Krebs

I found this yesterday. It is an A2 style sight (windage only though) mounted on an AK dust cover. I've been looking for something like this for sometime. I love AKs, hate buckhorn sights.

I've always felt that the AKs one big weakness is its lack of good iron sights. I honestly think that most of the rep for bad accuracy comes from that, rather than any real problem with the gun.

I will be ordering one shortly.

I e-mailed them with a few questions, here is the response:

Dear Mr. Correia:
Our AR15-style rear sight does not come attached to a receiver cover. You could,if you wished, send the part to us and have us install them, or you could have it done locally.
The sights themselves are attached to the receiver cover with screws. We also modify the end of the recoil spring guide assembly with a set screw at a particular angle, which helps to hold the receiver cover in place.
The sight was designed to be used with a standard-height AK front sight. There would be some adjustment needed after installation, but we don't think it would amount to much.
The sights themselves are $50. If you wish us to do the installation, the cost would be an addtional $65 for the labour, and about $8 for return shipping.

$65 seems a little steep, I would have it installed locally.


Or I would just epoxy the damn thing right on. Looks like it has a ton of surface area. But who knows how the set screw thing works.

Nice that it's only $50.

I plan on doing it myself. I'm a cheap son of a gun. And luckily for me, for anything super complicated I have a friend/shooting buddy who is a machinest.

The actual price of the sight seems reasonable.
 
I've wanted something similar for years. I've figured a M1 Carbine rear sight mounted on the top cover of the AK would probably work just fine. This looks alot easier though since it's setup for the correct height to work with the front sight, and apparently just screws right onto the top cover after you drill a couple holes. The set screw on the recoil spring assembly is a good idea to help secure the cover doesn't move too much. Don't know about yours but on my SAR1 and 2 the top covers are tight as heck anyway, no play...

Definitely tempted to get one of these myself when I get a spare $50. I'm a little disapponted that it doesn't come mounted on the cover already though, I had thought it did. A replacement if you decided you don't like this setup (since you drill some holes in your top cover) is under $10 anyway I guess. Be sure to post back how you like it if you're buying it...
 
I like the idea and just might do this. Looks cool enough. I'd have to mill down my current sight block just for looks.

Has anybody tried the peep sight(also shown on that web site) which replaces the existing rear sight???

Is there any improvement?? Or is the sight radius too short???

Wanting to put a better sight on my new SA M-7--but the dust cover seems quite a bit sturdier than the one on my SAR-1---not too sure about drilling holes into my new milled baby. So the AR sight doesn't seem to be a good option for myself.


Was also looking at a Williams peep sight for it---but it would seem to have the same problems of the other peep I mentioned---if there are any??

A friend of mine has one of those on his Bulgarian. (John L, also a THR member). He likes it much better than the standard sight. It is too far from your eye to have the natural peep sight effect but it is better than the standard buckhorns.

If you don't want to damage your good dustcover, you could always buy a spare cover for $10 or so, and mount the sight on it.
 
I also have a shooting buddy who has the "replacement" peep sight on his ridiculously expensive "100% american made" AK. (I still can't get him to look at the darn thing and remember the name till he gets back to work, and all we shoot is AR's and HK's when we go). He likes it better, I liked it the one time I shot it (before I knew it was anything different so I didn't look either :) ) Only thing, he said you have to be very careful of the spring under the sight during installation.
 
I just ordered one of the Krebs AR style sights last week for a custom gun I'm having built. They are not shipping until early next week I am told, apparently they are working on a comprehensive set of instructions. I'll post a full review when I get mine.
 
Update. Got mine. Got it installed. Picked it up from gunsmith yesterday. Full testing and evaluation to follow.
 
I'm jealous.....my gun is still being built....going to have to wait a couple more weeks to try it out. :fire: :D

If you aren't ready for a complete range report yet, can you give some more details on how the dustcover is secured?
 
Boing, the sight mounts to the dust cover with a pair of screws. The sight is held extra tight to the receiver by the addition of a shim that goes on the bottom of the recoil spring button. (or whatever you call that thing, that you push in to take off the dust cover). The shim puts extra pressure onto the dustcover and holds it into place.

So far I haven't got to wring it out nearly as much as I would have liked (darn responsibilities other than shooting!) but so far there has been no loss of zero, nor wandering zero problems. However the maximum range I have shot it so far with the Krebs is at 100 yards, and I only have put a couple of magazines down range.

Target aquisition is much much better.

The only thing I don't like? I know why Kreb's custom rifles have the old sight base milled off. The metal ears that hold the old sight block your vision to the low sides of the target. They don't interfere with the sight picture or anything like that, but you know they are there, and you can't see as much down range. To somebody like me who shoots competitively with lots of movement from target to target, that is kind of annoying.

I'll probably end up milling those off.
 
Correia, thanks for the update. I was curious about the old rear sight block ears...I am having mine milled off and a picatinny rail welded on low. Glad I went this route.
 
Soda, there is no elevation adjustment on this one either, you set it up by adjusting the front sight.
 
If you zero using the large aperture, flipping to the small aperture should give you a different elevation setting.

Assuming the aperture piece is a standard A2, and not the "same plane" aperture (or whatever it's called).

Just how much elevation adjustment that would be, I have no idea.
