Hey guys, I shot an AR-15 the other day and want one now. I know almost nothing about them. I know of a few companies and all, and was on Bushmaster's website today, but there was so much to look at I wouldnt know where to start. I am gonna be moving to California in like 3 weeks and I believe this means i cant actually buy an assembled AR out there but i can get parts? Also can anyone suggest a good AR to start with, something middle of the road either assembled or a kit it doesnt matter. Just looking for any information you guys could give to someone to buy their first AR and also anything I need to know about buying one in Cali if I even can buy one out there. Thanks!

www.aimsurplus.com has some listed on their website. For example, an XM15-E2S 20" goes for $699 and you could have it transferred to you in NJ before moving. Are AR-15s legal in NJ? You won't be able to get one in CA, that's for sure. Be aware that bringing one into California could get you into trouble. You could keep it at home, but I wouldn't take it to the range in CA.

How does Cali get away with this? They have so many import laws. Isn't regulating interstate commerce like that explicitly forbidden by the US constitution? Any lawyers with feedback?

12275. This chapter shall be known as the Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989.
12275.5. The Legislature hereby finds and declares that the proliferation and use of assault weapons poses a threat to the health, safety, and security of all citizens of this state. The Legislature has restricted the assault weapons specified in Section 12276 based upon finding that each firearm has such a high rate of fire and capacity for firepower that its function as a legitimate sports or recreational firearm is substantially outweighed by the danger that it can be used to kill and injure human beings. It is the intent of the Legislature in enacting this chapter to place restrictions on the use of assault weapons and to establish a registration and permit procedure for their lawful sale and possession. It is not, however, the intent of the Legislature by this chapter to place restrictions on the use of those weapons which are primarily designed and intended for hunting, target practice, or other legitimate sports or recreational activities.

The Keltec SU16 uses AR15 mags, the same round, and the same operational system, folds in half and costs $500, and it's California legal. It's about your only option short of not moving to California. Born and raised there, there's no way in HELL i would move back!

I'd handle an SU-16 before you buy...To me, the feel very flimsy. I've never shot one, but I've heard that they shoot pretty well.
Just a note, the SU-16 uses a gas piston and an entirely different bolt than the AR-15.

Thanks for the responses guys. Maybe the AR will have to wait a few years when I head back to the east coast. Anyways, anyone in the Long Beach area that can recommend a good gunsmith, range, and firearms dealer. Just looking for good places to shoot and good people to deal with. Any recommendations would be appreciated since I will be new to the area. Thanks
In addition, I was just looking at some pics of the FAB-10 in another thread. What makes that legal in California but the AR-15 illegal? Also I saw someone post a pic of CAB-10 and its California legal? What is a CAB-10 (did he mean FAB-10???).
The FAB-10 only shoots 10 bullets. These bullets are special friendly bullets. Everyone knows that you can't really hurt anyone with only 10 bullets.
The AR-15 shoots mean bullets. The detachable magazine means the same bullets can actually kill innocent children.
The Mini-14 shoots AR-15 bullets. But, the Mini-14 bullets are friendly because the Mini-14 is not an AR15, which is evil.

That would be my FAB-10 and CAB-10. The CAB-10 is simply my carbine version of the FAB-10. They are the same exact lower, just two different uppers. What might have confused you was that I screwed a "magazine shaped storage area" to the bottom of my sealed over mag well. That was not a real magazine, but a magainze cut in half, a block of wood inserted, and two screws holding it onto the gun. Why you ask? We do what we have to do in the PRK to feel more like free Americans. An AR just doesn't look right with out a magazine sticking out from under it.
