Baby Dragoon that is. I acquired this 2nd gen baby dragoon several months ago, no box, peened notches on the cylinder and a couple of bad dings on the wood. Priced accordingly. I cleaned up the bolt and cyl notches and finally decided to use this pair of faux ivory grips I had on hand. The case is for a pocket frame with a longer barrel but it well do. The mold and cap box are from another Colt set. I have found a original .31 baby dragoon mold, the rare brass one with a iron sprue cutter, most do not have the sprue cutter in .31 cal.

I have become very fond of these pocket frame revolvers in both .31 and .36.

Is it going to be a shooter?

You bet, already put 20 rounds down the pipe. A .31 doesn't have a lot of bark but with light weight you still know your shooting something.

Bigbadgun made me a sweet custom double shoulder rig. The right side holster is a pocket frame size. My cut down 51 on the left, I'll feel well heeled.

Doesn't that little .31 ball get around 700fps? would that but it above a .22?

I know Colt sold tons of those, and I don't know if people would have been buying that many if the .31 was close to useless.

We need some ballistic testing MCB!

The velocity of .22lr ammo fired from a Taurus 94 revolver is usually between 900 - 1050 f.p.s. depending on whether it's standard velocity or high velocity ammo.

The velocity of .22lr ammo fired from a Ruger MKII semi-auto pistol is usually faster than from a revolver and can run between 950 - 1150 f.p.s., with many in the range of ~1000 -1100 f.p.s.

Colt made over 325,000 of the old model pocket revolvers. It shoots a 50gr round ball at about 650-800 fps with 12-13 grs FFFg, depending on the powder used. Stings like a bee, a very large angry bee.

oh yeah I know a .22 will be faster, I just wondered if the .31 lead ball weighed more than the .22, enough to have more fpe. (I can't find the weight of a .31 lead ball online to save my life)

Oops MCB, you posted before I got done writing my message! hehe. Someone do the fpe calculations vs. the 22, I have to get going, I'll check the results later :D

The .31 pocket well have about 50 lbs ft of energy. Sam Colt made this specifically for personal protection. While not a man stopper, it is better than a knife or club. I know I sure as heck would not want to be shot be one.

A high velocity .22lr hollowpoint weighing 37.2 grains when fired from a 6 inch Colt revolver @ 1049 fps is calculated to have 90.9 foot pounds of energy.

A 27.9 grain .22 short fired from the same Colt revolver @ 930 fps is calculated to have 53.6 foot pounds of energy.

That is one nice revolver. do tell us about the grips

They are urethane faux ivory. They come oversize so you have some fitting involved. The material is easy to work with. Sand paper cuts it fairly fast and it polishes with automotive rubbing compound.

I have a second set for a 51 size frame I'm going to start soon. They have the "Williams Eagle" on them. You can age them by cutting 'cracks' or 'checks' with an x-acto knife. If I had the talent I would try some scrimshaw on them, but it would look like a 1st grade school project.
