Colt Pocket Pistols

I thought about something smaller than my beloved Pietta "Navy Yank Civillian" 1851 with the hated duck tail grip. Which I like btw. The Navy has displaced a .22 or .38 and shocking many my antique Colt .32 S&W long snubnose for my woods loafing time. I actually sold my Colt New Pocket.
If I'm not wanting to take a .44 with, the pretty little brass handled Navy gets the nod. I even like the case coloring on the frame. And yes, sometimes when you don't 'need a gun' something a bit smaller is appealing on some levels.

I like the five shot colts. But I went with the Pietta 1863 steel frame. Just pulled that ole trigger with Dixie. Should see it sometime next week. I thought long and hard about giving up that inch of barrel for a little more 'small'.

At the end of the day, if I hadn't gotten this fine replica on sale from Dixie I was going with a 4.5" bbl five shot .36 "metro police" Uberti from Taylor and Co. The Pietta Remington replica was just a bit smaller and lighter. If I want more 'reach' that's why Uncle Allessandro made me that fine mess of belt pistol reproductions.

But for posing points and beauty, that five shot 4.5" bbl fluted cylinder beauty that Taylor and Co shows in their pics would be the one for me. I'm just an old woods bum loafer type so I went with the little Pietta.

It arrived! Hate to take a file to it right away, but too much barrel/cylinder gap before fitting the arbor length.
I am sure this little cutie will turn out to be a gem.

6.5" barrels each?

I really like the Navy barrel but the Police cylinder. Which do you prefer overall?

5 1/2" both. The Pocket Navies, I have 2. They are Second Gen. Colts and the Uberti is a tiny bit smaller.
Some day I'll see a Police at the right price. I actually saw one not long ago but a New C-Series 3rd Dragoon at $500 side tracked me.

I can most certainly understand how you were side tracked!

When I first became interested in a percussion revolver I was seriously looking at a 2nd model as I like the square trigger guard. I talked to my father who told me to be patient and he showed up with a ROA and 1860 Army. I took the Ruger, though I didn't realize it was quite the gem it is.

I still think of a horse pistol but these days I think I'd go straight for the Walker as I enjoy them any facets of history there. Not to mention the amount of boom and smoke. My Ruger and Remington typically draw attention so I can only imagine the amount of turned heads and questions with a Walker.

That's a good price for a 'C' series Colt Dragoon. They usually start at auction well above 500 hundred dollars.

Very nice 3rd Dragoon! My favorite of all of the Dragoon models. Would love to have a Pocket Navy as well.

I need some advise from you fellows. I own many ROAs and large bore reproduction C&B revolvers. For some reason I am getting interested in the .36 Calibers.
It seems the 1851 is popular. I must say that Police Model posted is an eye catcher. Which .36 caliber makes a good shooter? And what conical bullet do you recommend?

While I think the 1851 Navy is the best looking revolver extant, the 1861 Navy is my preferred pistol for CAS. They are both natural point shooters.

Only caveats are Pietas non historical 8" barrel on the 1861 and the trumpet bell shaped grips on older model 1851s that have reportedly been corrected on newer made revolvers. Additionally, 2nd Gen 1851s have a smaller loading lever latch than other makers that results in falling loading levers. The 1861 Navies - also known as he improved belt pistol of Navy caliber - have an improved/larger latch that eliminates lever fall.

I admit that this one does drop the lever sometimes when loaded with over 20 grains of 3F Swiss.

Way to go Dave!! (I know you've had too much fun!!!)
Nice Dragoon Dicky!!!
I've had a '51 before and liked it quite well but as Fingers points out, the improvements along with the look and feel of the '61s make for a very nice package!!

I am going to send it to you. It looks nice next to the Whitneyville you did for me but needs your touch. You should recognize that 1851 Colt too as you did your magic to it, except the loading lever spring! snicker

Took it to the range today, with 20 gr. of FFFg DuPont about 8" high at 12 yards but with 15 grs. a 6:00 hold is all that is needed. Two Remington caps did not fire but changed them out for Winchester (a little more primer). When I got home I checked the hammer nipple clearance by snapping a paper punch disc of heavy card stock.then finding a high area on the frame where the back of the arbor comes through. I filed it down about .002.
This has been a fun project, but if you aren't the kind of person who also works on clocks send it to Mike at Goons Gun Works

Just cast 411 .36 (.380) round balls, guess the Police and Navy will get a workout while the Army gets to rest.
