I recently bought three 25 round aluminium (or aluminum if you prefer) magazines for my SIG 522. The reason is I want durable magazines that can be dropped on the ground if necessary.
I will tell you my first impressions...

Firstly, these are heavy mags. I don't know how much they weigh, but all I can tell you is that they are solid magazines and I like the weight of them. My magazines each arrived with a protective rubber cover over the top of the magazine:

All the components of the magazine are metal, except for the follower, spring retention plug and magazine floor plate. These are plastic, as in previous versions of Black Dog mags and magazines that are SIG branded and indeed CMMG magazines also.

The new Al mags can be taken apart for detailed cleaning or you can take out just the spring and follower as before, by removing the plastic base plate. There are 6 nice meaty screws holding the new mags together. In addition, there are two stainless steel registering pins keeping the magazine halves aligned during fastening. If you take the magazine apart, be sure to lift the top and bottom half equally or you will likely struggle to get the mag apart. Here is the mag opened:

As you can see above, these are solid, well machined mags with no burrs inside.

I have to confess that when I first inspected the new Al mags, I thought they might not work in my SIG 522 because the shape of the mags up top is markedly different from the other three magazines I have tried (the original SIG, the original Black Dog plastic mags and the plastic CMMG mags).

Here is a composite photo of the four different mags:

Notice how the magazine shoulder is a different shape (and rises taller) and how the follower does not protrude as much on the new mag.

However, I tried one of the mags today and it works. I fired 50 rounds of CCI Mini-mag through it and there was not one hiccup. It fits the SIG522 snuggly and works fine even when firing rapidly.

There is one difference though: because the follower sits lower, the bolt does not hold open on the magazine as before.
At first I was disappointed with this, but on second thought I don't see how this is a big disadvantage because regardless, I would have to pull the bolt back and use the bolt catch to secure it before changing mags.

I guess one thing you lose is the ability to see whether a round is chambered after you have pulled the trigger the last time and got just a click.

The followers appear to be the same dimensions except the new mags have an extended surface on the back of the follower.

The narrower shoulder of the new mag must be catching the follower lower down, hence it doesn't protrude as much. The followers look interchangeable but I haven't tested that yet.

Anyway, my first impression is these are quality magazines that will last much longer than the plastic ones.

I must also say that if you are not keen on buying the new Al mags (they are around $65 each) then the CMMG mags are a better choice than either the original SIG mags or the original Black Dog mags (I believe they are made in the same factory anyway) because the CMMG mags are not made from a brittle plastic and are more likely to survive a drop on a hard surface. I have two of the CMMG mags and have been running them quite hard and I haven't had any complaints yet.

I would say if you are going to go for a mag with metal feed lips, you should skip the half plastic and half metal mags from Black Dog (I haven't tried them) and go straight for the Al mags.

I'll update this thread when I have fired a few thousand rounds from these mags...

I was gonna say... the CMMG mags feel like they're made of solid, durable plastic and I doubt you could damage one by dropping it. Maybe if it landed on a sharp edge, right on the feed lips or something.

Thanks for the great report and pics.

You're welcome!

can you weigh one compared to say a CMMG?

I don't have a scale in that range but I can take a new Black Dog mag to the post office on Saturday and weigh it there (with an old Black Dog for comparison). Can't do a CMMG, those mags are back at the range now.

how much are they? I have several BDM's and the original Sig and they're all flawless. I like the look of the aluminum ones but not enough to pay 4x as much

Okay, I just got back getting these mags weighed (I know Dr Rob will appreciate I brought the CMMG back from the range). These are unloaded 25 rounders:

Original SIG mag (the translucent smoke version): 6.13 Oz
Original Black Dog mag (black plastic throughout): 6.20 Oz
CMMG mag (grey plastic with green follower): 7.37 Oz
Black Dog Al mag (without the rubber cap on): 16.79 Oz

The new Al mag is almost three times heavier than a factory SIG mag and it is more than double the weight of a CMMG mag.

Update...

I labelled the three new mags 1 to 3 and used only Number 1 for testing. I used the mag in my SIG522 on eleven different range trips and fired a total of 1830 rounds using that mag.
I used three different lots of CCI Mini Mag, one lot of Eley Sport, one lot of RWS target rifle and one lot of RWS rifle match.

Of those 1830 rounds there was only one round that failed to feed. It was a CCI Mini Mag that failed to strip because the follower did not rise.

There have been no problems since, and the mag has been opened and cleaned only once.

There are two things to note...

Firstly, the spring is prone to rusting just like the original SIG Magazines and the CMMG mag. After 1000 rounds, compare the spring from the used mag to a new one which I have been keeping unused as a control:

The used spring is obviously brown and has a rough rust texture (but is fine after cleaning). Oddly the worst rust is halfway down the spring, the first two inches of spring immediately beneath the follower are hardly affected. I've seen this pattern before with other SIG mags.

The second thing is to do with the shoulder of the magazine. Although the magazine sits firmly in the magwell and I have had no issues inserting it or releasing it, the shoulder does encroach on the forward part of the SIG receiver (but you will not notice it happening).
It results in the magazine taking some wear on the shoulder:

The receiver is unscathed (I'll post pictures of that later).

Overall I am very happy with the new mags and I will now use the other two at the range. I'll post back when the mag hits 5000 rounds, or if I find any difference between the wear patterns on the three mags.

Small update:

I have been keeping track of the number of rounds fired, according to each magazine and here are my comments after several thousand rounds through each type:

1) The Aluminium Black Dog mags have been the most reliable overall (in terms of magazine related failures).
2) The CMMG magazines are the next best mags, they seem to last better than the original SIG and the original plastic Black Dog mags.

At the moment, the CMMG magazines are beginining to give me some issues. The followers are getting stuck if I load more than 15 rounds in them. It's not a dirt issue and it isn't the springs (the mags will do it with any spring, even from a Black Dog mag).
The round count currently stands like this:

CMMG Mag 1: 1747 - 2 failures to feed
CMMG Mag 2: 2089 - 3 failures to feed
BD Mag Al Mag 1: 3000 - 1 failure to feed only
BD Mag Al Mag 2: 1296 - no failure
BD Mag Al Mag 3: 975 - no failure

There are two other useful pieces of info, now that some time has passed since the original post...

1) The shoulder wear on the BD Al magazines also results in marring of the finish of the SIG522's magwell, but it is trivial in my opinion. However it does leave a mark.

2) The original Black Dog plastic magazine has a taller follower and I wondered whether this would be a good replacement for the Al Mag follower, to allow the bolt to be held back on the last shot.
I exchanged the followers and found that it does indeed work. The magazine works flawlessly and now the bolt holds back on the last round.

This might be something that Black Dog can look into doing, if they haven't already, because some users will want all their magazines to perform the same.

The stuck CMMG followers I am still investigating. I've swapped the followers for some spare SIG followers I had (which are the same height but red in colour) and this seems to work so far, but I haven't fired enough rounds to be sure.
