Hi all, almost four years and four months after an attempted mugging at a Walmart parking lot, I now have my CCL. Hard to believe I put off getting it for that long!
Took my Wally-World walk in style tonight! Never scared, never paranoid, but now prepared.
Thanks-Doug

Conrats.
I should be receiving mine within a few weeks.
Would you care to go into detail about the attempted mugging??

I've been carrying 24/7 since I got my CCW in '06. And since I routinely have to go to Wallyworld at least twice a week, usually at night, because of work, kids, etc. There are many reasons for which I carry. Large parking lots not always well lit, open areas easy for attackers to flee, ours is by a major highway for quick get a way, and the most important reason, "the freaks come out at night". And since we are just south of interstate 44, we always seem to have questionable "stranded" travelers asking for "help$$$". And, we moved from the westcoast "meth capital", Falbrook, CA, to the US meth capital, Ozark, MO. I carry every where we go. It's easy to spot the twitchey, thin, flushed pock marked faces, itching, teeth and toothless jaw knawing, tweekers.

Somehow, it seems appropriate to carry for the first time in Wal-Mart. ;) Actually, the idea is to get you accustomed to carrying in crowded places and reassure you that nobody is noticing your gun.

This is how it happened:
After working the late shift and leaving work at 11 PM, on my way home I had to stop at the walmart closest to my home. It was mid November and there was a driving rain that night. Irregardless of the blowing rain, I parked in my usual spot...at the back of the parking lot and near a cart corral. After making my purchases, I put the hood of my over sized green rain coat and pushed my cart out to my truck. As I neared my vehicle I notice a late '90s Grand Prix parked one spot down from me. The car was running and had the parking lights on, I figured that they were waiting for someone to come out of the store...wrong.
I put my goods in the passengers seat, then went around towards the back of the truck to return the cart to the corral. I unlocked the truck using the remote and climbed into the truck. As I pulled the door shut I simultaneously put the key in the ignition. When the door shut it didn't do the usual click, then the door left my grasp and jerked open. I pulled the key out of the ignition and with the same hand pulled the hood back on my slicker and looked at the door. The next thing that happened stunned me as the figure that opened the door shoved a silver semi-automatic pistol at my forehead. As I pivoted sideways and leaned by body back wards I could see the person wearing a dark heavy jacket, ski mask (with eye, nose and mouth holes) and black leather gloved hand thrusting the gun to my head. The automatic response I had of wanting to avoid being physically hit in the forehead with the muzzle of the gun swung both my legs towards the mugger. The guy started to say something and as he did, I fully swung my legs towards him and kicked him in the chest with both of my work booted feet. The moment I made contact with his upper torso, he fell back and I exited the truck screaming like a maniac. The only thing I could think of was running back towards the lobby of the store, but funny as this sounds, I thought, “I'm too fat to dodge bullets!”. Instead of heading back to the lobby, I chose to go to the opposite side of the truck and match his movements to keep the vehicle between us. I looked over the truck to find him and saw him sprinting back to his car, get in and start driving the car past my truck. I moved to the tailgate area of my truck as he drove past me, I was trying to get tag number. To my amazement the guy was slowly creeping along, so I pulled my heavy duty box knife from my pocket and tried to flip it open. The rain and adrenalin made the simple task of opening the knife too difficult for me. The car got
about four feet from me and it just seemed to turn my fear into a rage. I took the impossible to open knife and threw it at the drivers-side window with all my strength! The knife went thru the limo-tinted window sideways and left a perfect knife sized cut out in the tinted glass! The idiot then punched the gas and sped away.
I climbed back into my truck, closed and locked the door and called the police. The police arrived in about five minutes. I told him the story, he told me what I did wasn't a good idea. I told him I'd rather die fighting than die in the cab of my truck, as I thought he was going to shoot me in the head and I had no choice but to act. The next day I went back to the same walmart to see if I could get a copy of the security video, they of course told me that the cameras didn't work in the parking lot. I've been told since that walmart does not let you have video of any incident on their property without vigorous legal wrangling. I was proud to take my walmart stroll at the very same walmart.
Thanks for reading-Doug

Actually, "the people of walmart" I'm not too worried about. it's the ones that they make look good, are the ones that concern me.
