OK, I've been shooting trap for over fifty years, have used virtually every device known to man to improve patterns and have measured many chokes, includng fixed, adjustable, Cutts, and poly. I've made add-on chokes for cut off guns. I've jug and swage choked barrels with fair to good results. I've read Greener and other shotgun wizards. My league averages normally ruin to 48-49/50 and have a big box of patches. Not bragging on anything here, just want you to know I'm not a novice.
I just ran into a choke style I've not seen before. Got a couple of 870 barrels in a swap and both have some modifications to the original choke. Here's a description: Original bore up to the beginning of the choke taper. Choke taper seems to be original. Muzzle portion, where the parallel originally was has been opened up straight to about .735, both on the barrel marked "Full" and the one marked "Skeet". No markings on the barrel as I suspected a "Herb Orre" special. It sure looks like one a friend had done years ago. Shotgun Sports magazine had an article on Orre this month but alas, no dimensions or specs on how he did his magic.
Has anyone seen this before? The full shatters birds well and has a pretty even pattern with no holes. It doesn't smoke them like my original TB full does. No 25s yet but it has an add-on high rib I'm not used to yet. Best so far are a pair of 23s. The skeet has not proved itself yet and seems erratic. No big problems, just wanted to increase my knowledge base. Thanks for any input you can provide. Stan.

i shoot close to where you do and have worked my way thru a whole box of chokes looking for the holy grail of chokes and when one or two seem to work i heard of another better choke that was the cats meow and off i,d go in a tizzy to get it. about 10 years ago a friend and i went to the trap range early and just the two of use patterend and shot different stations while changing chokes and it was a eye opener. i found the chokes i use to the day all extended . impmod for trap, impcyl-cylinder for skeet and the same for sporting clays(sometime a mod instead of the cylinder) for longer shots. i do change up shot sizes #7.5 or # 8,s. eastbank.

My 45 year old TB is full. My singles gun. My Superposed is IM/F and it is doubles. The high rib I'm trying is for my late brother's TC which has a monte carlo that is too high for me. I may just get an add-a-rib for the original barrel, a TC Mod Trap.
1 oz of 8s for 16, 1 1/8 of 7 1/2 for anything 23 on back.

Look up Tula Choke, the Russians came up with this style of choke after studying
a Lyman Cutts compensator choke.
The slight relief in the barrel allows the shot column to settle down before hitting the choke it self.
The Cutts does the same thing, that gap from muzzle to choke gives tighter patterns.

I have made duplicates of the Cutts and have the dimensions of the Tula. Not the same. No relief before the choke, just enlarged parallel after.

Where do you shoot, Eastbank? I'm mainly at Peoria Skeet and Trap and River Valley with Secor thrown in once in a while. We used to have a bunch of clubs/VFW/Legions here and I can remember shooting seven days or nights back in '75 (one time, had kids, several jobs and in an apprentice program.)

by meaning i shoot close to you, i meant 94-95 avg 100 at trap. i shoot trap-sporting clays at bluerock sportsmens club on sun. and trap-five stand at mifflin county sportsmen club wed. and trap -skeet-sporting clays at sheniqua sat.all in central pa. eastbank.

i wish we were closer, i would enjoy a round or two of trap with you and a cold beer or soda after. eastbank.

I am partial lately to Fat Tire ale but developed a devotion to Guinness while in Ireland a couple years back. I have made some cool friends here and on TS.com and have never met them in person.
