Hi I want to get another pistol. Now the problem im having is this. I cant choose. I had and older 1991A1 Colt and wasnt so happy with it. It was a good gun but not what i expected from a Colt. Now these new 1911's that are out are getting great reviews. I have shot Sig 220's and they are very accurate and reliable as well. They seem a lot lighter than the 1911. I think the Sig would be eaiser to carry due to the weight difference. Well thanks for any input here. Thanks

I haven't had the most positive experience w/ SIGs, although they seem to be very popular & have built a very good reputation of quality, dependability, reliability & accuracy.
Since you've already had a poor experience w/ a 91a1, try the SIG this time.

This is easy. Just buy a Hi Power. Spegel or black Navridex grips. TriJicon night sights. Lots of ammo. Go shoot. Clean gun, eat lunch, shoot some more.

See? No problem, be happy :D :D :D

Edited: :) FWIW, both are great pistols, I'd shoot both and pick the one I like the best. You just might end up buying the other one eventually anyway ;)......

Sounds like you want a 1911. You had one before, but it wasn't all it should be, now you sorta want another one, but the lure of the mighty SIG is clouding your judgement. Ask me how I know. ;)

I'm guessing it would be worth it for you to risk getting another less-than-stellar Colt for the chance at getting a great one, so I'll say you should examine some Colts, and pick the one that "talks to you". Try to get newest possible production. Colt recently stopped using MIM extractors (after a rash of breakages) and went back to using machined bar stock.

I'd get the SIG, but that's only because I already have 1911s that float my boat.

I think you answered your own question when you said you wanted to carry the gun, and were sensitive to the weight of the piece. The Sig P220 (not the stainless one) has an aluminum frame and weighs about 26 ounces. A regular steel 1911 weighs about 38 ounces. The P220 also has a shorter barrel (4.4 inches) than the 1911 (5 inches), so the frame is shorter. And the Sig's reliability is probably better than the 1911.

I think the Sig would therefore be a better carry gun for you, assuming you like the DA/SA trigger system and decocker.

Yeah, it sounds like you're leaning heavily towards the 220. It's a good gun. Not many will disagree with that regardless of what they prefer.

To me, the SIG slide is too tall and the bore axis is too high. I've been shooting 1911s so long that when I draw a SIG, I end up looking at the back of the slide instead of the front sight.

Sig 220 v. Colt

I can tell you from years of carrying both that the Sig is a lot nicer to carry; Commander length, and the mechanical accuracy is as good as anything out there short of a match gun. They always work and shoot well right from the box, which is more than I can say for a lot of 1911s. It does have a higher bore axis than the 1911, and being lighter as well it kicks a bit harder. I can clean the falling plates way faster with a good 1911.

If I had a good, reliable lightweight Commander I might have to retire the Sig. Hard choice, and one I haven't entirely resolved for myself to this day.

Although I carried a Colt 45 in the army; we now carry Barettas in the AF with double and single action. For me, the practice and training of what you are currently involved in would lead me to choose one over the other. If it were a carry firearm, for me, then, I'd choose the Sig -- I like my 220ST as well as any firearm in the inventory. However, if you were just going to build a target gun, many people prefer the single action only and all the whistles and bells that can be added to 45 platforms. And then there are some who just want an ol army 45; someday I'll get one. Ergo, I'd say the choise would depend on its purpose.

I prefer the sig 220 but that my preference. Both can be fine guns so will have to decide which fits you better.Thats the bottom line, personal preference.

Both are excellent. Impossible to go wrong. I would choose in this order:
1. Which is the better deal.
2. Which is the better deal.
3. Which is the better deal.
