A soon to be issued CWP is forcing me to think small, small enough to be carried on my 5'10" 140 lbs frame.

Long ago I had a Walther PPK/S 380 which shot straight but bit my big hand every chance it got, so no more Walthers for me.

I'm thinking about the Sig P232 but maybe there is a high quality DA first shot 9mm out there that I can conceal in my pocket.

Kel-Tec PF-9 any good? Can't find any at local dealers.

Any recommendations much appreciated.

The KelTek is pretty well thought of as an easy carry, although not really "fun" to shoot because of the grips. Tends to be a little hard on the hands.

Glock 26 is easier on the hands, something you actually enjoy shooting 300 rounds through at the range ... but can be a little "chunky" as it's a double stack 9mm. I have one, but 75% of the time here in SC I'm in Tshirt and shorts so it doesn't "carry" well then.

A -real- easy carry, if you could stand to go that small, is an NAA Black Widow in 22 magnum. Small, accurate, EASY to pocket carry in a holster. Now, 22 Magnum isn't a 45 or a 9mm (even if it is LOUDER!), but it's a right nasty little cartridge in its own right.

Bottom line, get what you -will- carry, and carry all the time. Doesn't do you any good if you need it and it's home in the bedroom nightstand.

Don't count Walther out of the race, the PPS is nice and about the same size as that PPK, but with a much better grip. It works well with these Sasquatch hands. Has one passive safety (two-piece trigger)
Springfield XD sub compact offers good ergonomics for my monster hand, and more capacity than the PPS, it is thicker but you get two passive safeties.
Taurus makes some decent compact 9mm offerings. Honestly the PT111, while decently built, is not happy in my hands.
Kahr makes some nice slim offerings, I've rented one and it was fun, but no experience beyond that.
Kel-Tec makes some of the smallest and lightest full power 9mm pistols on the market, I understand that they need some polishing out of the box to reach full potential. From handling (but not shooting) I can say they are good if you like slim grips.
If you demand all steel, there are a few sub-compact 1911-style 9mm pistols out there, Springfield's EMP is the first to come to mind.
HK P7 is metal-framed slim, reliable, and has the squeeze-cocker safety, which makes it good for ergonomics and in-holster safety ... plus you get to talk about your "squeeze cocker" and puzzle others at the range.

Find something that is happy in your hand, rent or borrow if at all possible, and don't be too heartbroken if you don't find the perfect pistol on the first try.

I have to agree with you on the NAA mini revolver. I love mine and being in south Texas I understand about being in shorts and a t-shirt. Thin is easy to carry and dont have to worry about printing. I call it my "get the hell off me" gun. Also have a Beretta model 21A that is nice to carry, but myBersa Thunderplus is there whenever weather permits.

i'm about the same size (5'11" - 150lbs) as the OP. i carry an EMP or Kobra Carry. with a good holster & belt, you can carry anything.

Agreed on the HK P7, I had one and liked it until one day under stress it wouldn't fire: I was not squeezing it !

Need to take a look at the PPS, thanks.

For .22 I have the Walther TPH and this is what I've been putting in my pocket on occasion but now with the CWP I would like to step it up a little.

Thanks guys.

Took a tour this morning and saw most of what is listed above.

Somehow I need to get adjusted to striker fired pistols and forget about clean breaking sears. All nice but so much plastic which makes for light carry but presents one more thing to get used to.

P232 is only(!) a .380 but darn nicely done and it fits my hand. Dealer had them on sale for $519. Tempted.

The original P7 was replaced by a M13 and it was easier to separate myself from it at that point.

Buy whatever you want now but eventually you will wind up carrying a J frame revolver. :)

I have a Kahr MK9. That is the best CWP I have found in a bigger caliber. It is a little bit heavier but that just takes most of the kick out out it and double taps are a dream, it stays dead on line. It is slim and conceals well. With a great belt and a VM2 you can't tell its there.

the PM9 is quite lighter than the MK9 but kicks more, great carry gun, i also carry the keltec pf9 and love it, but it kicks a whole lot, double taps would be difficult

I was in a situation where I absolutely positively could not be "made" today, but I still managed two guns and 30 rounds of ammo on me.

The guns were a S&W 642 (J-frame) and a Kahr PM9 with two spare mags. I highly recommend either one, but the J-frame is more versatile in my opinion.

You are asking for concealability and firepower. That combination usually equates to a little bite when you shoot. I wouldn't worry about the bite from a CCW weapon since you will not really use it as a range gun and will most likely not notice that bite IF you ever NEED it. Look at the P64, it bites but is inexpensive and the Corbon PowrBall packs the same punch as a standard 9mm Remington Golden Sabre. Good luck!
