In a house near Bennington, Vermont, USA, North Am
My boss asked me about his... He's got one of these in .30-06.
He said that the last time he fired it, the action popped open.
Knowing I'm a gun fanatic he's asked me about it.
I assume that the barrel lock mechanism is not engaging properly or may be badly worn. I also assume that the "cleat" on the barrel is integral, whereas the one inside the rifle is replaceable, as in many other break-actions that I am familiar with.
I haven't had the chance to look at it, and will probably do so tomorrow...
Any of us here own one of these?
Encountered a problem such as this?

I'm thinking your correct in that the locking bolt is likely not engaging properly. I doubt it would be from wear however . Most likely from a piece of debris/crude and a cleaning/oiling should do the trick. (crude preventing the locking bolt from fully engaging)

If not then possibly the tension spring for the bolt lock or some other related part giving a problem
 
My old 20 gauge NEF shotgun didnt lock shut just right all the time. I usually had to give it a good hard jerk when I closed the action to get it to lock completely.
 
Something else to consider - is your boss left-handed? The reason I ask is because he could be resting his thumb on the action release lever and accidentally unlocking it during recoil.
But most likely it just has crud under the lever not allowing it to fully lock down, as the others have said.
 
First is it clean if not then clean it and report back after a shooting session
Second if it still does it after a good cleaning call Marlin/NEF and talk to the warranty section and have it sent back, while it is there have a trigger job done. additional barrels are cheap at this time while you have it at NEF.

No, he's not left-handed...
When he closed the action, he made sure it was locked.
He gave it back to the guy he bought it from, who promptly scrubbed the weapon and fired about 10 rounds through it with no problem...
My boss is just a wee bit "scared" and hasn't fired it since he got it back...
I'm gonna have to give it a whirl and see what goes on with it...

What a real good cleaning should entail...

I got a chance to bring my .50cal ammo can of cleaning supplies and a schematic of the Handi-rifle that I downloaded from the net to his house...
I totally disassembled the weapon and I gave it a toothbrush and Q-tip scrubbing and a good once over with gun conditioner from kleen-bore...
No noteworthy wear to report but as was stated: It was dirty.
I don't mean regular use dirty, I mean like it was NEVER cleaned.
Crud? Crude? It had both... I'm gonna post a new one about preferred methods of cleaning...
Anyway, we got it back together and working and I got him interested in the extensive barrels they make for it...

A single shot weapon with multi-barreled capacity... NICE!

Sometimes too-hot loads can cause the action to pop open, too.

I just wish NEF would come out with a barrel in 7.62x39 or true 5.56.. all that cheap ammo makes me giddy.
 
Couldn't you rebore one from .30-30 to 7.62X39mm?

You'd still have the problem that the bore diameter would be .308, instead of the .311 needed for 7.62x39. This would mean higher pressures, and with the NEF/HR action, I'm not sure that's a good idea... :uhoh:
