hi everyone, ive decided to replace a troublesome extractor, and am looking at the cylinder and slide, and the wilson combat, in stainless, i know both have good reputations, but anyone here know if one is definitively better than the other? thanks in advance

Both are very good. You may be interested in checking out some videos on you tube for fitting and tuning the extractor. I have used both Wilson Bullet Proof and C&S extractors and they are both top quality. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that C&S may already be tuned, so all you may have to do is adjust tension.

Buy a Wilson Heavy-Duty extractor and learn how to tune it yourself.
It ain't hard.

It's basically breaking the sharp edges of the hook with a needle file where it may or may not dig into the brass case rim during feeding, then polish it where you filed it.

Then bend it so a case will stay under it of it's own weight when your shake the slide.

rcmodel, do they make them stainless, if so, where could i buy them?

Who knows, who cares.

Extractors are spring steel, and you have enough problems with carbon steel springs without throwing low carbon stainless steel into the mix.

Extractors don't turn to red rust dust anyway if you bother to clean them every 20 years or so.

There are 1911's from WWI that ran corrosive ammo for two wars that still have perfectly fine original carbon steel extractors in them.

Caspian makes stainless extractors. Probably other makers out there as well.

Reasonable price and I believe they are cast. I have them in a couple of all stainless pistols and they are fine so far. They required normal fitting and de-burring per Mr. model's post above, I don't recall any extraordinary fitting needed. Probably fewer than 1000 rds. on each so really cannot speak to longevity but no signs of wear or weakness so far.

Learn to live with a black extractor in it. Rc speaks the truth. No need to handicap yourself by using stainless. A quality carbon steel extractor will last much longer and perform better.

this is for a stainless gun btw, replacing a broken extractor, ill probably just use a standard and not worry about the rust, done in before with no problems, thanks everyone!

I'll second that. Besides, you can use fine sandpaper to take the finish off and leave the butt-end in the white so it won't be as noticeable. Just smear a little oil on it once in a while. It won't rust.

That assumes the carbon steel extractor is actually spring steel. It might just be cheap cast steel which will lose its spring in a short time.

The Caspian stainless extractors are made from 17-4.
Excellent quality. Machined from bar stock.
Available from Brownells.
