Have any of you guys seen or used the new EFMJ's from Federal? They are "expanding FMJ's" that seem to act like a hollowpoint on impact without acting like one in your gun (feeding problems) or immediately on impact (filling with soft target). Anyonw have a field report on these?

If by "new" you mean at least two years old then yes, I've seen them.

The performance on these through denim has been subpar and the Detroit police department has, apparently, been unhappy with their performance. From what I hear stick to regular quality hollowpoints such as gold dot or Win. ranger.

How could Detroit be unhappy with it ? They went from an FMJ to the EFMJ, that's quite an improvement. Most of it has been sold over seas where there are more restrictions about JHPs.I have on the other hand heard good things about it both in tests and ,at this time limited street use. But I would use JHPs unless I had a feeding problem in my gun or was legally limited [like NJ].

From the news articles I read they're saying that at times when the BG is wearing thick clothing the behavior of the EFMJ has been pretty much identical to an FMJ. That's consistent with tests done by both Dr. Gary K. Roberts and David DiFabio. They want JHPs.

Ah. Well, I just read an article on them that talked as if they were new.

I have a Bersa Thunder .380, and I don't know how well it cycles HPs in live fire, but I know that when I manually work them through, they jam a lot.

Godfather - jams

Manual cycling will always result on more jams because the amount of force is not consistent like a recoiling weapon. It's similar to 'limp-wristing' causing malfunctions on the firing line.

I had an older Bersa and never had any problems with HP's, but to be safe you should try several types of HP's and get 100 rounds of trouble-free operation before depending on the weapon/load for self-defense.
