I have a 120 Ranger also, in 20GA, and would never part with it. Its been a super dove, grouse and pheasant gun. Action is very smooth.

HeavyD,
This reply comes a little late, but I've just recently found the high road.

I also have a Win 120 Ranger 12 ga, and its the exact same gun as yours...with the checkering around the grip. Mine also has Winchoke. Came with MOD and I've added Full to the lineup. Anyway, just wanted you to know.

I bought this gun brand new in the late 80's...from a Kmart of all places. Has been a great gun and though I've shot maybe 50 boxes of shells through it in that time...it performs as expected. Given time, I may be able to locate the original "manual" and paperwork...as I never throw anything away.

I could never find specific info in a gun book on this particular variation before, and so I was curious about it too. Thanks for the info.

mine has checkered wood also...

I found this thread on a google search...

I recently traded for a Winchester 120. It's marked "full" for a full choke barrel, and it's got the checkered forearm and grip. No recoil pad, just a hard plastic butt plate.

Seems like a nice gun. None of the info or pictures I found on these 120's seemed to indicate that there was a variation with the nicer wood. I was beginning to think someone had dropped a 120 barrel into a 1200 action or something... until I found this thread.

So there are at least 3 of us with this variant of Winchester 120. :)

I have a winchester model 120 shotgun that I love. I only have the full choke for it, though, and I'm really struggling to find anywhere that sells the chokes for it. I'm hoping for an improved or modified choke. Any ideas? I've tried gunbroker and the other one linked on this thread with no luck. My choke is a screw in choke, so I presume that means it is a winchoke system? I'd never even heard of that until this thread.

The gun was purchased by my grandpa, then he gave it to my dad because he never shot it, and my dad gave it to me for the same reason. It still works great, it's been taken care of very well, and I'd like to keep it, but trap at the local gun club with a full choke is a challenge. :p

poor_richard,

When you get it all cleaned up, action and all, get some Gun Butter or Mil Tec, best gun oil lube you can find. It will keep all metal to metal parts slick as snot on a glass doorknob! The GB won't coagulate with heat either, stays slick!! Good Luck

Your gun is also the same as my Sears Model 200 my father gave me almost 45 years ago. Bought a slug barrel from a Winchester 1200 for it years ago. Perfect fit. My oldest son has it now.

I also have a 120 I bought in 1981. Used mostly for Trap and some dove hunting. Has been used and sadly abused for 50 years, still shots great. Would like to get one for my granddaughter. Took her shooting, can't get it back from her.

The Winchoke tubes and the original Browning "Invector" (Not Invector Plus) have the exact same thread pattern. You should be able to use both in that mod 120 Ranger barrel.
