Im thinking of getting a new gun for deer hunting season, here is what I have in mind a .30-.06 with a 4x scope.I think I want a single shot. Can yall point me in the direction of some good brands please.

Fella's;

Yup, there's a fair credit card's worth of difference between a Handi-rifle with a Tasco fixed 4X and a Ruger #1 with a Leupold fixed 4. Not to speak of a custom hi-wall with the Euro-glass of choice.

Some more info surely would help.

Some folks like the NEF HandiRifles for utility (although I know a bunch locally that are having lockwork issues after a while). Some like the Rossi (altho their after-purchase support is thin). Some folks like the Ruger #1 for class (but they're expensive).

Me? I think that you can't beat the Encore for fit, finish, accuracy, handling, and modularity. However, an Encore will set you back about $550 without glass. The Ruger is mo' expensive still.

The only way to get into a single-shot plus decent glass for less than $600 is the NEF or Rossi.

I would suggest a Thompson so you have a base to work off later if you so choose. The problem is its pushing your total price just for the rifle.

Maybe search high and low for a used one?

I am not a fan of those Handi or Rossi rifles, but to each his own.

I have a Remington 721 in 30-06. I got it used for $250. The stock is chipped and isn't going to win any fashion awards, but last i recall I can shoot 2" groups with iron sights and Korean surplus ammo at 100 yards from a sandbag. I am still looking for a good piece of glass for it.

New isn't always better. :p

When you say "single shot", do you mean a single shot break breech? Or a bolt action? I have a .30-06 Savage bolt action with 4 round magazine. I love it. Another good choice is a Remington 700.

any reason why you want to stick with single shot? or just your preference?

I'd say a rem 700 and you could have your choice of scope

rbernie is correct! Let me expand:

Go to Wal*Mart (pray that they are competent in the sporting goods section)...

Order the NEF Handi-Rifle in 30-06. This comes in either stainless or blue. Stainless is like $250ish. Blue is closer to $200. If you can deal with .308, the survivor is a good choice and has a nicer pistol grip style stock made by Choate.

These will offer a decent trigger, good accuracy, and reliability. They are very robust. IMO, more heavy duty than some of these newer bolt actions.

NEF's have a very decent weaver style rail that comes with the rifle. So no need to buy expensive mounts. You will need rings though.

While there, pick a Leupold - any Leupold they have. They've got a few different ones for under $260. Clarity should be excellent, brightness good. Should be reliable. Scopes found in plastic packaging have crappy glass and are blurry. It is the only scope there with a no BS full lifetime warranty too. Leupold is famous for that. The Leupold rings at Wal*Mart are good enough. Many snobs will bash them as being junk, as they purchase rings that are $120 or more, rather than these which will be $25 or less. They will work flawlessly. Ignore the snobs. Some aren't snobs, but have other uses...like shooting at 1,000 yards or more. That's a different story.

All of this should come in under your $600 budget. You should have money left over for a box or two of premium hunting loads.

This whole package/system will give you *at the worst* a 2 moa rifle, a 4lb crisp trigger, single shot, short overall length due to nature of the action (handy, thus the name), quality optics and dependability. Of course, as with anything - test it well. 2moa is very good for any stock rifle. Ignore the idiocy on the web of people posting all their miracle groups or lying about rifle performance. Chances are, it will do better than 2 - if you're up to it.

Many will advise that you should spend as much on an optic as the rifle. That just might be the best advice. Many people spend their whole wad on the rifle, then do a cheesy scope. Bad idea. This particular option, like I said, gets you quality in both rifle and optic. Actually, really good quality in both, which for your budget listed - is very, very hard to do.

Or better yet, go to your local gun shop, ask to look at some good used 30-06 rifles, buy the one you like. Will probably alreadt have a scope. Remington model 700 rifles used and scoped might run from 350-500 in awesome shape. Thats the way to go. A bigger shop should have plenty of used 30-06's you can get already set up to hunr for under 600.

Outside of my dislike for handi rifles, Don't Tread On Me nailed it. Spend as much on the rifle as the scope. Its disgusting how many people ruin a perfectly good rifle with a POS scope.

I would check out your local gun shops for a used 30-06 bolt action rifle. You can usually find some pretty nice rifles for around $300 if you look hard enough. If you couple this with a Leupold VXII 2-7x33 scope you will have a heck of a nice combination for hunting big game. These retail for $300 too which would put you right at the $600 mark. Chances are that if you find a nice used rifle you will be able to haggle the shop owner to $600 for the whole package (including taxes and everything).

Also, if you are going to be using the rifle for deer hunting I wouldn't rule out the .270 Winchester, the .280 Remington, the .25-06, the .308 Winchester or similar calibers. Sometimes if you open your mind a little bit to other options you can find better deals. That has been my experience anyway.

Yes go to Wal-Mart - and spend a little under $300 on Savage model 10, or a little over $300 on a Remington model 700. Then get a 3-9x40 Burris Fullfield II (http://www.riflescopes.com/departme...e_scopes/burris_fullfield_ii_rifle_scopes.htm) or Leopold VX-I scope (http://www.riflescopes.com/departme...s/leupold_vx-i_riflescopes.htm?sb=&so=&page=2) for $200. You'll have a great rifle and great optic that will last you the rest of your life. And come in under budget - so you can buy a good case, sling, and ammo.
