There is a thread in "Activism" titled "Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day" and I just wanted to let people know why they should attend.
One bill carried over from last year would make any magazine holding over 10 rounds illegal. Another would make all .50 rifles and loaded rounds along with all assault weapons illegal unless they are grandfathered. The catch is you must register them with the ISP so they will know where to go when they are outlawed at a later date.
These probably are not the worst, they have several concerning ammunition. If all of these would be passed it would be illegal to manufacture, sell or posess any firearm ammunition that was not encoded with a number registered in a database maintained by the ISP. Depending on which bill number the law would take place anywhere from 2009 to 2011 and be paid for by the $.05 tax per bullet sold.
Don't get me wrong this wont be the end of firearms in Illinois, this kind of nonsence comes around every year and with the help of many of our great downstate legislaters many of whom are Democrats shoot these down. But is is important gun owners in this state fight every year and on a united front. That is another of our problems in Illinois all gun owners are not united with hunters and shotgunners seeming to not worry about what might happen. I think I will make some copies of the ammunition laws and show some of the people at work that this will affect them also. Jim.

Keep in mind that this is the same nutty state that now arrests you in your car going through a McDonald's drive-thru if you have a cigarette or cigar lit (because you're within 15 feet of the building). They have the momentum, and I'm afraid it's going to get much worse before it gets any better.

7 (a) "Coded" and "coded ammunition" mean a bullet carrying a
8 unique identifier that has been applied by etching the same
9 onto the base of the bullet.

So, apart from or in addition to the microstamping stuff, they want a unique number put onto each projectile? So if I were in Illinois in 2010 assuming I had become a resident of IL and had acquired a FOID and if I purchase a brick of .22 rimfire that each of the 500 projectiles within that brick will each have a unique identifier that is registered with the state? That's going to be some mighty fine printing/etching.

Assuming the projectile is of a soft material like lead or a lead substitute what is to prevent the marking/etching from getting obliterated by the firing/shooting process? And how exactly is some field officer going to check and verify that each projectile complies without disassembling each cartridge?

Yes, all the little bullets would have to be marked, and don't forget the 500 round brick would have $.05 extra tax per bullet total $25.00 per brick. HB4259 calls for coding ALL firearm ammo so I assume that means each piece of shot in a shotgun shell would need the same number. No matter how stupid this sounds this is comming from Daley land also known as the Chicago area.
Support IGOLD 2008. Jim.

Please remember to keep this limited to discussion of which bills are proposed and what they would do. "Legal" discussion only.

If it turns into a big Illinois political furball, it'll be closed. We don't have a Legal and Political forum anymore.
