New Gun restriction proposals in Alabama...anyone heard about this elsewhere?

Are real rights subject to revocation by bureaucrats until one successfully appeals in court?

Well, effectively, yes. If your name is erroneously purged from a voter roll by a state employee (something that has happened in many, many states), then going to court is what it usually takes to get it restored.

I mean, that's the point of courts - not to make sure no right is ever violated, but to fix it (and sometimes provide recompense) when it is.

Yes, when you put it that way, BergerFan222, it sure sounds crazy. I'll note, though, that I believe an Alabama county sheriff isn't technically a "bureaucrat" but an elected official, not that that should matter, though, when you're talking about revoking a permit to carry in that State. As for the "driving privilege," I've heard and read many times how States don't view driving as a right but more of a privilege, not that I necessarily agree with that, but I certainly get your point.

Not at all. One simply re-registers to vote. It's free, easy, and as painless as it was the first time. No need to hire an attorney and go to court if one is erroneously purged from a voter roll.

Lets face it the worst thing in AL is easily, Birmingham.

Meanwhile in the real Alabama, "SB 24 would enable a law-abiding adult to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense without a government-issued permit"

Anyone want make a wager which one gets further?

Alabama Lawmaker, “We’re Not Against Gun Rights, But….”
That's what they all say, whether it's local, state, or federal level. Heck, international as well.

It will be tough sledding for them here. :)

John Rogers is crazy as a crap house rat and he's pandering to the blacks in Birmingham because of all the killings recently.
If anyone here remembers the OLD Dick Tracey, with Mumbles, John Rogers is 10 times harder to understand, and when people say that he said so & so, he'll mumble something else, the guy needs a translator for the English speaking people to know what he's saying, evidently the "news" stations here can translate what he babbles.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people, and I wiil NOT go to Birmingham without at least 1 and a backup, preferably 3 and extra full mags

If you're purged because the system mistakenly understands you to be a felon or other person not entitled to vote, that's not going to be a remedy in most places. You'll need to go to court.

Again, vindicating wrongly-taken/violated right is kind of the point of having a court system.

Yeah we have couple of those here in Texas

"Their" tactic is to flood the floor with bills. Or the California tactic, pass so many small gun laws it would take so long to overturn them all.

There is a small group that tries to introduce something along these lines every year here. With a conservative majority in both houses it goes nowhere.

Interesting. Since I'm not from Alabama I had to google him. He's 76 years old, so that tells me he likely grew up during the bad days of segregation, and probably even witnessed, if not directly suffered from, the beatings and violence perpetrated against many African-Americans during the civil rights movement. I've read articles in the past that claim the first gun control laws in our country were actually directed to prevent minority groups from arming themselves for protection. To me it seems ironic that given what his past life experience may have been growing up in Alabama in those days that he would introduce a bill making it harder for law abiding Alabamians, including African-American Alabamians, from obtaining the means to protect themselves and their families from being targets of crime and violence.

As a proud Alabamian there is a snowballs chance in Hell of this ever coming to fruition. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this and I will fight this to the very end if need be.

Politicians like Rogers know there's no chance for such extreme legislation to pass so they lie in press conferences playing the emotional "mothers and children" card and claiming they're not against gun ownership when their proposed bill would do nothing to have prevented the tragedy they're using as a smoke screen.

They should be outed whenever they show their heads.

Hi all,
Don't wait, start fighting now! otherwise you might end up like California. I wished we had enough sense back when all this had started for us to do more to stop the Libs and there none common sense of thinking.

Not exactly on point, but still concerns Alabama:

https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/al...a-sheriffs-oppose-constitutional-carry-money/

The article claims Sheriff Depts oppose Constitutional carry in Alabama. Some of the statements quoted lead me to believe there is a well-entrenched opposition to restoring 2A rights by a few in authority in a supposedly conservative southern state.
The Alabama sheriffs association has been against every gun rights bill I can think of, so I'm not really surprised.

The sheriffs of Alabama have had a good bit of power taken from them in the way of issuing pistol permits, and they didn't give it up willingly or easily. They fought hard and lost, but their still fighting to keep and regain power.

This article, although old, has one of the most unreasonable statements I've ever heard from an Alabama sheriff.

“We know things about our citizens. We know who’s going through a divorce. We know who’s in a bad time, who may be drinking too much, who may be abusive, but hasn’t necessarily crossed the line of a crime. But in our opinion, they don’t need a pistol permit.”

Wow. The mistrust of public citizenry and dismissiveness of due process rights are very discouraging. For all y'all in Alabama, keep fighting the good fight. We're trying to do the same here in Texas.

Sheriffs bring in a lot of money in issuing permits that goes into their personal slush funds.

Another discouraging incident for Alabama, of all places, where a girl got expelled from High School for having a toy water gun in her car at the school parking lot:

But at least there's some hope with the Senate just having passed Constitutional carry:

Hopefully the House will pass it and the Governor will sign it.
