I'm thinking of getting in, as a total novice, to some type of competition.

Perhaps IDPA in the CCP division.

Is my 3913 Lady Smith a reasonable gun for this -- even though I'm not a lady? :)

Of is there a better place to start?

Do you carry it?

If the answer is "yes"....then by all means, shoot it in IDPA. It will not be competitive in USPSA just based on magazine capacity and it really won't fit in any division except PRODUCTION, but even then you will be running against 10-round guns. Which, yes, it is okay for the pure gun handling and manipulation rewards you will gain, but you will be at an equipment disadvantage even against shooters of relatively equal skill.

BUT...in IDPA is where this pistol will shine (provided you do your job). You will gain the benefit of increasing your gun handling, drawing from concealment, and reloading skills as well.

Shoot the poop out of it and have fun.

This is the gun I most often shoot in IDPA, though on occasion I shoot it in USPSA too.
