As much as I am normally against advocating it (personal distaste), I would say you're in it good to buy yourself a good AR. You have enough money for a complete build of the "good stuff"--stainless, free-floating, heavy-barreled good stuff.
The mini 14 is a pencil-thin barrelled, scaled-down version of the M1 Garand operating method, and it performs only "average at best", from what I have heard. You have the choice of getting a sub-par rifle you'd be likely to sell later and a decent pistol, or an excellent build of an AR with some customization thrown in there for good measure (new grip, a sling, some mags to begin with) for around $7-900. What makes the most sense looking at it like that?
