My son and I have built ourselves a little gun range with several steel targets out to about 50 yards with targets ranging from 10" down to 4",..and as normally happens it has turned into a competition.

I shoot a Browning Buck Mark .22 with a red dot reflex really well and can keep up and occasionally best him but he is changing the rules so I need your help! He has banned optics, that was my only advantage against his young eyes and quick reflexes.

I don't want to pull the red dot off my Buck Mark so my next best gun is my Sig P320 that, to be honest,...I don't shoot that well. So I need to get to shooting this Sig better or look into purchasing another gun,...I love an excuse to buy another gun.

So my questions,...is this Sig P320 an accurate gun? Is there some performance options that would help? Should I buy another gun,..I would like to stay with a 9mm or 40.

Thanks guys!:)

Second the idea for another .22. Whatever you get purchase one with a fiber optic front sight, or purchase one from Dawson Precision. It makes a big difference for me with how fast I can get the front sight on target.

I guess it depends on how badly you want to beat that little whippersnapper! If your considering another .22 with adjustable sights then I would say look at a Ruger Mk.IV Competition or a Buck Mark Field Target. If you want something other than your SIG P320 (which is a pretty decent pistol already), then maybe a Ruger SR1911 Target model.

If that doesn't do the trick then you bend the rules and get yourself a .22 target rifle!

I like the rifle idea but he would never let that fly!

He shoots either a hopped up XD .40 or a Ruger SR1911 9mm and thinks I should have to deal with some recoil also so I need to stay with a centerfire.

Sounds like I need to spend some time with the Sig 320 in my hand.

You guys are making me sound like an old man, or maybe I did that!:p I am in my mid 40's and my son is 23, my eyesight is not what it once was,..my wife keeps trying to get me to the eye doctor.:(

CZ Tac Sport Orange in .40

Won't even be fun anymore since you'll win every time. Add a dualing tree to really rub it in.

Wow I really like that until I checked the price! I feel better missing with a $500 gun.:D

Why did you recommend .40 over 9mm? Is the .40 normally more accurate than the 9mm?

It is decently accurate. My brother has one. Honestly though, just about any pistol from a reputable manufacturer is more accurate than the majority of shooters are capable of. I'm kinda partial to CZ's myself but it's really a personal choice. What kind of competitions are you doing? Just accuracy? Speed too? From the draw? Any physical stress, cardio, lifting, running, dragging, H2H, etc. mixed in? We have friendly competitions regularly but it's always with the goal of improving folk's fighting ability, which means we're using our carry guns 90% of the time.

Change the rules back!
Tell him to spend the money and get an optic on his gun!

Otherwise, another Buckmark with fiber optics and as long a barrel as you can get away with (longer sight radius) is an idea. Same magazines, another .22.

You could look at some of the cheaper CZs or Tanfoglios. I am absolutely astounded that my CZ 75 compact is as accurate as it is. Much more accurate than me, and entirely stock. Not even new sights or trigger. HA! Not even new grips!

I've got no experience with your Sig, so no idea there. And unless you want to go compete in a sport that has .40 in major power factor, I see no reason to go with that.

I'll go out on a limb and say that even though the Sig 320 trigger is supposed to be pretty good, the SA trigger on a CZ is probably better. Even stock.

We are shooting for accuracy, no time limits. We shoot "follow the leader" with both only loading 10 rounds, first gun empty is the loser.

My son wants to get "good" with open sights before using optics,...so that means dad has to shoot open sights also.o_O

Bah!

Tell him that dad already got good with open sights!

If you don't want to buy a gun, I recommend lots and lots of dry fire practice with your Sig (unless your manual warns against it) as that will make you learn your trigger. The trigger pull is going to be your biggest obstacle to trouncing the whippersnapper!

Because my steel targets at grassroots 3 gun events, aren't always calibrated so well for 9mm. And the TSO is pretty much a USPSA limited pistol that rewards major calibers.

Set up your range to mimick some USPSA classifiers, and when ya'll get good at it, start competing.

You could bend the rules too tell him first shot is da only

My son and I would really enjoy attending some competition shooting,..is there a list of when's and where's?

I shoot my Sig 320 in IDPA, some USPSA and Steel Challenge matches. It's more that adequate in all regards. Ha...........it has the ROMEO1 option.

Check the IDPA and USPSA web sites for a club that may be local to your area. If there are some hopefully they have a website with information to the matches they host on some type of regular basis.

My son is a good shot; I have witnessed his shots on two deer in his younger years that amazed me. With that said, dad practices much more than he does and dad still has a slight edge in the consistency, concentration and accuracy category.
As several times before, I watched him drive away from the house last week to return to Jax NAS where he is an active duty Naval AC - his Christmas leave had ended. I wish that we could shoot more together and I would not care who prevailed - it seems like I was deer hunting with that little boy just yesterday but he grew up, those days are gone and now duty calls.

ONLY in your mid 40s? Damn, I wish I was that young again, the eyes were only starting to go!:p

Of course if he wants you to shoot centerfire, a nice S&W K-38 Masterpiece, 6" barrel shooting wadcutters might put the whup on him.........

Or a full size 45acp shooting 200gr swc target loads........
