I just picked up my first HK at lunch today. She is an USPc in .40. Although, I love the way it fits my and the positioning of the controls, the double action trigger pull leaves a bit to be desired. Can the trigger be improved by a simple spring change or do I need to send it out for custom work? Also, how many carry the HKs cocked and locked?

The trigger will improve over time. I have the USPc .40 also, and it's rapidly becoming my favorite carry pistol. There isn't all that much that can be done to it, though.

I, however, don't carry it cocked and locked. I carry it in the decocked mode with one in the chamber.

I carry my USP40c just like Joe; decocked and unlocked.

My brother sent his USP40c off to Teddy Jacobsen for a trigger job. I haven't tried it out the DA pull, but he says it's a lot better.

The USP is notorious for having a terrible DA pull and for there being very little you can do about it. I carry mine cocked and locked, so I don't care. The LEM trigger on the P2000 and some USPs is a very nice DA trigger. The LEM may be able to be retrofit onto your USP.

I carry my HK cocked & locked, so it makes no difference how my DA pull feels, but it got better over time.

After several thousand rounds, my usp40c has smoothed up considerably. Do some research over on hkpro.com and you will find people that do some trigger work. Short answer is lots of dry firing and good lube will help. If it's really untolerable, you could get a lighter main spring (from wolff). I'd only go down about 2lbs and then test, test, test, and test again for reliability with your desired ammo.

It really is a neat pistol and a solid design. Have fun.

It is really easy to smooth up the trigger on your USP without any major gunsmithing. I posted how to do this over on SIGforum a while back. Basically you just push the pin out (watch out for flying parts!!!) and smooth out all of the bearing surfaces either by using jeweler's rouge or by simply rubbing the parts together vigorously until all of the roughness is smoothed out.

My USP Compact now has a trigger that is almost on par with my SIGs. :)

Do a search over on SIGForum for the much more detailed instructions. If you cannot find it, drop me an e-mail at [email protected].

Just take out the "_NOSPAM" part.

Yeah, I compare the trigger to a pair of beans you still have to break in. Once you do tho, it'll be one of your faves! ;)
