I just saw where Hodgdon is releasing a new powder for Lever-Actions.
It will come out as a new product in January 2011.
It is the powder Hornady uses in their 30-30 LeverEvolution ammo.

Looks to add close to 150-200 FPS to a 30-30 load.

New Shooting Times shows:
(out of a 20" Rossi carbine)

38.5 grains pushing a Sierra 150 FPS at 2,449 FPS
35.5 grains moves the Hornady 160 FTX at 2,355.
36.0 moves a 170 Nosler Partition at 2,310.

Both powders will be more than worthwhile! Looking forward to them!!

LVR may cause a resurgence in 30-30 Winchester popularity. I have an old Model 94 with a serial # just past the 1 million mark, (Granddad's saddle gun) and I have to say it's still one of the funnest to shoot guns I own!

I'm sure if the LVR powder provides the advertised boost for the venerable 30-30, it will be great in other medium capacity cartridges too.
Might be good in some of the older milsurp rounds requiring lower pressure ammo.

Any info on where these powders fall on the burning rate charts?

Guessing around the 4895 series for versitility. Basically what these powders do is retard the peak pressure over a longer time period thus allowing higher velocity with reduced chamber pressure. The pressure peaks forward of the chamber, not in it. This powder has been used by OEMs for years.

Great news! Been hoping for a long time Hodgdon would release some of these new high-energy low-pressure powders. Have a new (used) Win 94 in the works. Hope LVR don't have a "super duper" price, too.

To be ideal in the .30-30, LVR's burn rate should be a hair faster than 4895. Closer to 748 or H322. There's kind of a "gap" there in Hodgdon's line up (between H4895 and H322), so that would make sense.

LVR could be a real barn burner in the .223 with lighter bullets - if you can get enough powder in the case. Bulk densiity is another unknown. I'm guessing it will run to the bulky side.

From another forum. Not my words, just some comments on the new Hodgdon powders.

Notice that announcement also said this:

According to Hodgdon's Chris Hodgdon, Superformance and Leverevolution powders essentially duplicate the proprietary blends currently being used by Hornady, and previously unavailable to handloaders.

The key words there "are essentially duplicate the proprietary blends". Essentially duplicate doesn't mean it's the same stuff and proprietary means that they are not allowed to copy it exactly.

I called Hornady today and they aren't real happy about what Hodgdon is doing. First it's not an exact copy of Hornady's powder. Second he said it will raise the velocity but wont get nearly the velocity they get with their blended proprietary powder, and third their powder is something different then what I reported before what blended meant and I don't care to elaborate on it.

Hornady is a tough company to deal with. They have an arrogant and elitist attitude for sure.

FWIW, Hodgdon doesn't make smokeless powder, then distribute it. All their powder is made in Canada by General Dynamics, in Australia by Australian Defense Industries, or Europe by Norma and Lapua.

Yet Hornady is fine printing their exact load data using 4350 powder on their factory 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition so handloaders can duplicate it. It's tough being a company that makes factory ammo and reloading equipment and components. Olin (Winchester) makes ammo, components, and is branded St Marks Powder distributed by Hodgdon. They don't give a hoot that you can duplicate factory loads using Winchester brand powder, in fact they seem quite flattered you are interested in doing so. That is why I buy Winchester stuff over Hornady. All the performance without the arrogance.

that is a fact horniday customer service sucks at best but i am looking forward to these new powders ill bet the superformance would be great for my 375 rum and other magnums this is the first time i have heard of the leveraction powder i wonder what it would do in my model 94 ae 45 colt it might be too slow

I sight in all my guns before hunting season... basically just put a box down the tube to make sure they are on.

My Marlin 336 at 100 yards with LeveRevolution is my most accurate rifle. It dumbfounds me because I have pieces that are much more expensive and have nicer scopes. My 336 has a no name package deal scope on it from Dicks Sporting Goods.

I had a 4 shot group at 100 yards all touching in a dime size hole.... shooting from the prone. I really don't get it, but that rifle is unreal. It literally shoots where I point it, and makes me feel like I know what I'm doing.

Needless to say it will be going with me on all my hunts.... including one coming up next week at Chestnut Hunting Lodge in NC. Russian Boar hunt.... just feel the need to draw some blood before the real hunting season starts. I will hunt with my 7mm Mag from the stand, but when we run the hogs with dogs I'm gonna bust out the 336.

I just started reloading for the 30-30 this year, I think I'm gonna love working up loads with the new powder. I think my 30-06 is going to like their Superformance powder too...

This is the reason no one will get the same velocities out of the Hodgdon powder that Hornady is getting. Hornady is using a stratified powder charge. If you do not believe me, pull the bullet on a Superformance cartridge, pour out the powder, mix around a little, put the powder back in the case, reinsert the bullet seating to the same oal. Then chronograph that load with a factory unaltered cartridge. I believe you will find a big decrease in muzzle velocity over your chronograph.

well, i have not had the same experience as you guys have had. in fact, just the opposite. i had a die that was resizing the neck out of round. they sent me a replacement die, without even asking for the old one back, free of charge, and right away. anyone can have a quality control problem. stuff happens. what makes the differnce to me, is how they handle the problem. they treated this problem very professionally, i could not have asked for better service.

as for the new powders, i will buy some. i look forward to getting it. will it be everything that the factory powder is? we will not know until we get it, load some, and shoot it over a chronograph. to me, there is no sence beating a horse to death, until you have at least ridden it! also hope the price isnt super as well. availability will also be a concern. i have been looking for a pound of imr8208xbr for 2 months now, no one locally can seem to get their hands on any of it. i am not desparate enough to pay a shipping and hazmat fee for one pound of powder just yet though.

Pardon my ignorance here, but a quick google search left me unclear. Is a stratified load essentially a duplex load that hasn't had the powders mixed? Are the powders packed to capacity but layered?
